Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 7-22-19

The Cardinals Blue lost their first two games of the week and ended on a three-game winning streak.  The club is 24-13 and are one and a half games out of first place in the South Division behind two teams.  They are 10-6 at home and 14-7 on the road.

The Cardinals Red split their schedule, losing the first two, winning the middle three, and losing the last.  The club is 17-24 and are eight and a half games out of first place in the San Pedro Division.  They are 9-12 defending home, 8-12 as the visitor, and are 23 games from being eliminated from postseason play.

Week In Review:

July 15, 2019: The Cardinals Red opened the week up on the road ageist the Cubs Two.  The Redbirds took an early lead with a couple runs in the first five frames and planted three on in the sixth.  The Cubs took advantage of the errors, came back, and won it in extras.  Edgar Manzo struck out six and allowed one run over five and two-thirds in the start.  Smith Vargas singled twice, doubled, tripled, and drove in three runs.

July 16, 2019: After having a couple days off, the Cardinals Blue opened their week visiting the Angels.  The game was tied 1-1 until the Halos plated four runs in the fifth then two more in the sixth as they easily won 8-3.  Brandon Hernandez singled and drove in one run.

July 16, 2019: The Cardinals Red hosted the Cubs Two in the second game of the series.  Both teams had the same amount of hits but the Cubs were able to push one more run across the plate in the contest.  Miguel Maiz pitched one scoreless frame in the ninth.  Albert Inoa singled, doubled, and drove in one run.

July 17, 2019: The Cardinals Blue stayed on the road and faced off against the Yankees.  The Redbirds jumped out in front early with four runs over the fourth and fifth innings, but the Yankees took aim at the bullpen and plated seven runs in the second half of the contest for the win.  Gustavo J. Rodriguez struck out a career-high eight in the five-inning start, for probably his best start of his career.  Brandon Hernandez and Gustavo A. Rodriguez each knocked in two runs, and Leudy Pena hit a solo home run.

July 17, 2019: The Cardinals Red opened a two-game series against the Mets Two, first game defending home field.  The Redbirds opened the first inning with four runs, then plated four more over the fourth and fifth inning, and added four more in the eighth for the victory.  Yonael Dominguez opened and hurled four and a third scoreless innings.  Claudio Ramirez and Erick Thomas each drove in three runs, and Diowill Burgos contributed two RBIs.

July 18, 2019: The Cardinals Red visited the Mets Two for the second game.  The game was close from start to finish but the Redbird pulled it off by taking capitalizing on Mets errors.  Hector De Los Santos closed out the game striking out four over the final two frames.  Smith Vargas and Sander Mora each had three hits and one RBI.

July 18, 2019: The Cardinals Blue welcomed in the Nationals, looking to end their losing streak.  The Nats took an early lead with three runs in the first two frames, but the Redbirds marched back to plated four in the fifth and three more to round out the win, while still committing six errors.  Dionys Rodriguez pitched two scoreless innings towards the end of the game.  Darlyn Del Villar singled twice, doubled, walked, and drove in two runs.

July 19, 2019: The Cardinals Blue went on the road to face the Mets One.  The Redbirds jumped out in front early with four runs in the first five frames.  The Mets came back to make things interesting but ended up falling in the ninth.  Americo Lugo struck out one and held the bases loaded in the final one and third innings for the save.  Darlin Moquete singled, tripled, and knocked in three runs.

July 19, 2019: The Cardinals Red began a two-game series against the Rangers Two, first at home.  The Redbirds offense scored three runs in the first three frames, but the Rangers didn't go silently as they took the lead in the seventh with four runs.  The Cardinals plated four runs in the eighth and held off the Rangers for the win.  Sander Mora singled, tripled, walked twice, and drove in two runs.

July 20, 2019: The Cardinals visited the Rangers Two in the second game of the two-game set.  The Rangers returned fire in the second game and doubled up the Redbirds 8-4.  Hansel Marcelino and Augusto Calderon combined to strike out five batters over the final two scoreless frames.  Sander Mora singled and knocked in one run.

July 20, 2019: The Cardinals Blue hosted the Phillies Red in the final game of the week.  The Redbirds exploded with nine runs to opened the contest and added two more in the eight in the easy victory.  Wilmer Ortega struck out two and allowed one run in the six inning start.  Darlin Moquete and Gustavo A. Rodriguez each drove in three runs.

Who's Hot:

Diowill Burgos (Red) will look to extend his ten-game on-base and four-game hit streak in the next week.  The 18-year old left-handed hitter went 8-for-16 (.500) with three doubles, two RBIs (one w/two-outs), five runs, three walks (one intentional), one stolen base, and four strikeouts.  He played two games in right field, one in left, and one as designated hitter.  The September 1, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs, total bases, OBP, SLG, AVG, and OPS.

Augusto Calderon (Red) has thrown three consecutive scoreless outings and five in his last seven.  The 18-year old right-hander was called from the pen on July 17 and struck out a career-high five and allowing no hits or runs and uncorked one wild pitch over one and two-thirds innings for the winning decision (1-2).  On July 20, he struck out all three batters faced.  The April 25, 2018 free agent signing held both inherited runners on base.

Smith Vargas (Red) turned things around this week with a six-game on-base and three-game hit streak.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 10-for-19 (.526) with two doubles, two triples, five RBIs (one w/two-outs), six runs, five walks, one hit by pitch, three stolen bases, and two strikeouts.  He played four games in centerfield (two outfield assists) and one as designated hitter.  The January 8, 2019 free agent signing saw his AVG jump over 50 points this period.

Who's Not:

Erik Pena (Blue) has not connected for a hit in his last five games but has reached safely in two straight.  The 19-year old switch-hitter went 0-for-4 (.000) with two runs, two walks, one hit by pitch, two sacrifices, and one stolen base.  He played one game in left field (one outfield assist) and one at third base.  The July 12, 2016 free agent signing has seen his AVG drop almost 100 points since his hitless streak started.

Reinys Portillo (Blue) has been hit hard in his last two starts, including his worst of his career during this period.  The 18-year old right-hander opened on July 16 and allowed seven hits, five earned run, one walk, and struck three out over four innings for the losing decision (2-3).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-3.  The July 28, 2018 free agent signing has hurled nine innings in his last two starts, giving up 11 hits, nine runs (eight earned), three walks, and striking out nine.

The Cardinals Blue extended their winning streak to four games to begin the week, then lost one and won the final two.  The club is 19-8 and are a half game behind the first place Phillies Red in the South Division.  The team is 7-4 at home and 12-4 on the road.

The Cardinals Red won the first two games of the scheduled and alternated the last three for a 3-2 record.  The club is 12-19 and are eight games out of first place in the San Pedro Division.  The team is 6-10 defending home field and 6-9 as the visitors.

Week In Review:

July 1, 2019: The Cardinals Red visited the Mets Two to open the week.  The Redbirds served up four different pitchers at two or more innings each.  The Mets were only in the lead in the first inning and gave it up in the second then the Cardinals turned things up the end the game with five runs in the eighth.  Miguel Maiz pitched two scoreless innings to end the contest.  Luis Andujar and Jesus Orecchia each drove in two runs.

July 1, 2019:  The Cardinals Blue hosted the Rockies to begin their week.  The Rockies scored first with two in the second but the Redbirds plated two in the bottom half, then two more in the fourth.  The Rockies tied things up in the ninth, only to give up the contest in the bottom half.  Reinys Portillo struck out four and allowed two runs in the five inning start.  Brandon Hernandez singled and hit a two-run homer and Fernando Diaz added two singles and two RBIs.

July 2, 2019: The Cardinals Blue visited the Orioles Two in the second game and saw their offense explode and pitching dominate.  Gustavo J. Rodriguez struck out six and allowed one run in the six inning start.  Victor Villanueva and William Miranda followed with three scoreless innings of relief.  Leudy Pena doubled, walked twice, and drove in one run as the Redbirds capitalized on the Orioles five errors for the victory.

July 4, 2019: The Cardinals Red went out on the road to face the Brewers.  The pitching gave up one run in each of the first three frames but the Redbirds offense tacked on single runs five innings and added two in the eighth for the victory.  Hancel Rincon struck out two over five scoreless relief innings for the opener.  Albert Inoa collected three singles and one RBI.

July 5, 2019:  The Cardinals Red and Brewers flipped venues for the second game of the series.  The Redbirds jumped out in front with three runs in the second, but the Brewers answered back with six in the third and held onto the lead until the end.  Jesus Orecchia walked three times, homered, and drove in three runs.

July 5, 2019: The Cardinals Blue visited the Yankees in their next contest.  The Redbirds put seven runs on in the first two innings and didn't look back as they added a pair of two-run frames for the 11-4 win.  Luis Tena pitched two scoreless relief innings and struck out four mid-game.  Elvin DeJesus, Darlyn Del Villar, Gustavo A. Rodriguez, and Luis Pena each drove in two runs.

July 6, 2019: The Cardinals Blue visited the Nationals in their final game of the week.  The Redbirds plated two runs in the second and that was pretty much all they needed as the pitching posted zeroes until the ninth.  Wilmer Ortega started and pitched five scoreless innings with Eduar Pimentel following with two more scoreless frames.  Fernando Diaz doubled and drove in one run.

July 6, 2019: The Cardinals Red hosted the Tigers One and this game went into extras.  The Redbirds tacked on two runs in the first and let the pitching handle the rest but the Tigers scored a run in the seventh and then eighth to tie it up.  The Cardinals defense committed a critical error and handed the win to the Tigers.  Henry Gomez opened for the Cardinals and tossed four scoreless frames.  Juan Sanchez collected two singles and one RBI.

Who's Hot:

Diowill Burgos (Red) racked up some extra-base hits during this period.  The 18-year old left-handed hitter went 5-for-18 (.278) with one double, one triple, two home runs, four RBIs, four runs, three walks, one sac fly, three strikeouts, and one caught stealing/pickoff.  He played three games in right field (one outfield assist), one in left, and one as designated hitter.  The September 1, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs, total bases, SLG, AVG, and OPS.

The Cardinals Blue won their first game, lost their second, and finished the week off on a three-game winning streak.  The club is 4-1 and hold a half game lead for first place in the South Division.  They are 2-0 defending home and 2-1 on the road.

The Cardinals Red won their first four games of the season but fell in the their final three.  The club is 4-3 and are two games out of first place in the San Pedro Division.  They are 2-2 at home and 2-1 as the visitor.

Opening Week Round-Up:

June 1, 2019: Cardinals Red visited the Brewers and jumped out in front in the first inning with two runs on wild pitches.  Angel Cuenca started for the Redbirds and gave up only one hit and no runs, while striking out five in the first five frames.  Diowill Burgos doubled in two runs in the sixth to put the Cardinals up 4-0.  The Red team added another in the seventh and the bullpen gave two runs to the Brewers.  The Cardinals won 6-2.

June 3, 2019: The Cardinals Red hosted the Brewers in the second game of the season and the bats came alive.  The Redbirds scored two or more runs in four frames with Diowill Burges leading the way contributing a two-run homer in the sixth.  Fernando Brazoban and Smith Vargas each each legged out triples in the contest.  Ludwin Jimenez gave up seven hits ans two runs in the five-inning start.

June 3, 2019: The Cardinals Blue began their season on the road against the Angels.  The Halos took an early lead with two in the bottom of the first and held the Redbirds scoreless in the first four frames.  Darlin Moquete ended the Cardinals silence with a two-run homer in the fifth.  Gustavo A. Rodriguez plated three runs in the ninth to help the Blue team defeat the Angels 7-6.

June 4, 2019: The Cardinals Blue stayed on the road and faced off against the Yankees.  The bats were swinging for both teams as the Yankees spread runs out across the games and the Redbirds came in at the end.  Jose Rodriguez doubled and drove in three runs with Darlyn Del Villar adding two RBIs.  The Cardinals pushed late but fell short 12-10.

June 4, 2019: The Cardinals Red welcomed in the Tigers One and blew up the first inning.  The Redbirds scored five runs in the first and didn't let up as they plated another three in the third and two more in the sixth.  Diowill Burgos singled, doubled, homered, and drove in four runs for the Cardinals as they won 10-6.

June 5, 2019: The Cardinals Red traveled to play the Tigers in the next game and things stayed a little closer this time around.  The Redbirds started off with three runs in the first and the Tigers answered with two of their own.  The Red team added another run in the third and the bullpen silenced the Tigers until the final frame.  Miguel Maiz struck out three over two scoreless innings for the winning decision.  Alexander Samuel collected two singles and one RBI in the 4-3 victory over the Tigers.

June 5, 2019: The Cardinals Blue hosted the Nationals for their very own close game.  Gustavo J. Rodriguez made the start for the Redbirds and went four innings only allowing three hits and one unearned run.  Hancel Rincon tossed three scoreless innings towards the end for the Blue team.  Carlos Arcia hit a solo home run in the third, Leudy Pena hit a two-run homer in the sixth, and Diego Velasquez hit a solo homer in the seventh to help the Cardinals squeak by the Nationals 8-7.

June 6, 2019: The Cardinals Blue visited the Mets One for a nail biter.  Yordy Richard started for the Redbirds and went four inning innings, striking out seven and allowing one run.  Victor Villanueva, Luis Tena, and Cristoffer Zapata followed with a combined five scoreless innings.  The Blue team scored two runs courtesy of Luis Rodriguez and Diego Velasquez in the seventh for the 2-1 win.

June 6, 2019: The Cardinals Red hosted the Diamondbacks Two late inning close call.  Miguel Yedis struck out three and allowed one run in the opening four frames.  The Redbirds put up two runs in the third and two in the seven with the help of Claudio Ramirez.  The Red team couldn't secure the win as the bullpen coughed up four runs in the eighth for the 6-4 loss.

June 7, 2019: The Cardinals Red traveled to the Diamondbacks Two and extended the game an extra three frames.  Angel Cuenca opened with four scoreless innings for the Redbirds.  Each team's bullpens struggled to contain the runs late in the contest as nine runs were scored in the final three frames with errors and wild pitches playing a apart.  Bryan Matute collects four singles and three RBIs as the Cardinals lost 9-8 in 12 innings.

June 7, 2019: The Cardinals Blue hosted the Phillies Red for somewhat pitcher's duel.  Wilmer Ortega struck out four and allowed one run in the opening four and third innings for the Redbirds.  William Miranda and Nelson Prada combined for six strikeouts over the final four scoreless frames.  Hansel Otamendi, Darlyn Del Villar, and Gustavo A. Rodriguez each contributed a RBI in the 4-2 victory over the Phillies.

June 8, 2019: The Cardinals Red went out on the road to face the Phillies White.  The Phils jumped out in front early with two runs in the first and silenced the Redbirds offense with five scoreless frames.  The Red team finally got on the scoreboard with some defensive miscues by the White team.  The Cardinals plated five runs in the sixth with help from Jesus Orecchia, who had two RBIs.  The Phillies clawed back and scored five of their own in the next two frames and shutdown the Redbirds offense for the 7-5 win.

Alexander Samuel started at first base and batted fourth.  2-for-5 with one two-out RBI, one run, two strikeouts, and assisted in four double plays.
Diowill Burgos started in right field and batted fifth.  0-for-3 with two walks.
Luis Andujar started at third base and batted sixth.  1-for-2 with one RBI, two walks, one strikeout, and one caught stealing.
Claudio Ramirez started in left field and batted seventh.  0-for-2 with one RBI and two walks.
Endri Salas started in centerfield and batted ninth.  2-for-4 at the plate.
Miguel Maiz entered in the fifth and pitched two innings.  He allowed one hit, no runs, two walks, one balk, and struck three out for the winning decision (1-0).  (g/f:0-1)
Hector De Los Santos entered in the seventh and pitched three innings.  He allowed two hits, one unearned run, two walks, and struck four out for the save (1).  (g/f:1-0)

Rough Outing:
Juan Sanchez started as designated hitter and batted eighth.  0-for-3 with one walk and one strikeout.
Edgar Manzo started and pitched four innings.  He allowed three hits, two runs (one earned), one pickoff error, hit one batter, and struck three out.

2018 Dominican Summer League Reliever Of The Year: Leonardo Taveras

The Dominican Summer League relievers, much like the starting rotations, struggled on the mound when the 2018 season opened and had its hiccups as the season went on.  But by the end of the year, we saw several arms stand out and take the reigns in their new roles.

Freddy Pacheco was hands down the hurler the stood out the most in June leading the both teams in strikeouts and saves.  Leonardo Taveras, Wilman Madera, and Miguel Maiz were a little ways away but showed strong months.  Roy Garcia was pushed, as a returning member, but failed to get on track.

As Pacheco and Rodard Avelino were promoted, we saw the additions of Jhon Victorino and Angel Ortega along with improvements from Madera, Nelson Prada, and Anthony Trompiz.  Taveras continued to convert saves, for the most in the month of July.  Garcia and Dionys Rodriguez struggles dragged down their months.

Sebastian Tabata received a big push in the final month of the season and showed he could handle it.  Ortega, Taveras, Prada, Trompiz, and newcomers Gustavo Rodriguez and Victor Villanueva were also pitching well.  Garcia, looking to finish strong, was having trouble with his control.

Ortega, Tabata, and Pacheco make good cases for the award but when looking at which relievers were continuous, consistent, and improving throughout the entire season, arms Taveras and Madera stick out the most.  Taveras edges out Madera in innings pitched, strikeouts, and saves.  Madera is just so close but in my eyes comes up a tab bit short.  My personal pick for the DSL 2018 Reliever of the Year goes to Leonardo Taveras.
