The Dominican Summer League Cardinals rotations, for both
teams, started off on the rough side but gradually improved as the season
progressed. The clubs saw the return of
Jose Moreno, Francis Ventura, Enmanuel Solano, Wilfredo Pereira, Dionis Zamora,
and Allinson Benitez. Hector Soto pitched
out of the bullpen in 2017 and made the jump into opening for 2018. The remaining arms were all fresh faces.

During the month of June, Pereira and Zamora were promoted
pretty quickly after short-season clubs went into action. Moreno made the most starts and struck out
the most but also coughed up the most walks and runs. Ludwin Jimenez, Julio Puello, and Martin
Cordova were strong in the opening month of the season.

During the month of July, Solano received the well-deserved
promotion. Ventura, Soto, and Inohan Paniagua
showed signs of improvement and settled.
Soto almost struck out a batter in each inning logged. Puello, Cordova, and Jimenez continued strong
campaigns from June. Moreno struggled to
turn around his sluggish season. Luis
Ortiz was the sore spot as he gave up the most hits, runs, and tied for the
most in walks.

In the final month, Moreno finally turned things around for
a strong finish to the season. Puello,
Soto, Jimenez, Paniagua, and Benitez were striking out batters on average every
innings pitched. Ortiz showed some
improvements and Cordova ended on a bad note.

My choice for 2018 DSL Starting Pitcher of the Year goes to
Julio Puello as he led the openers in ERA, WHIP, and was just one strikeout
short of also leading in that category.
He also did not accumulate a loss during the season. Francis Ventura was a reliable arm and both
Hector Soto and Ludwin Jimenez put up some solid numbers for consideration.
