Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 6-17-19
The Cardinals Blue took three of five games during this period and ended on a one-game winning streak. The club is 7-3 and are tied for second place, with the Rockies, in the South Division. They are 3-2 defending home and 4-1 on the road.
The Cardinals Red extended their losing streak, from the previous week to six games then won two of the three to end the week. The club is 6-7 and are tied for fourth, with Mets Two, in the San Pedro Division. They are 3-4 at home and 3-3 away.
Week In Review
June 10, 2019: The Cardinals Red visited the Phillies white to open the week. Diorys Guerrero started and pitched five innings for the the Redbirds and allowed two hits, one earned run, two walks, and struck four out. The hitting side of the game didn't come through as they were held to four hits, one run, two walks, and 11 strikeouts. Claudio Ramirez drove in the only run as the Cardinals lost 5-1.
June 10, 2019: The Cardinals Blue opened the week hosting the Rockies. Reinys Portillo has a strong start for the Redbirds, going five innings and giving up five hits and one run while striking out four. The offense struggled to get runs across as they did collect seven hits during the contest. Gustavo A. Rodriguez tripled and drove in one run as the Cardinals lost 2-1.
June 11, 2019: The Cardinals Red, looking to end a two-game losing streak, stayed on the road agains the Cubs Two. The Redbirds jumped out in front early with a 2-1 lead after five. Edgar Manzo opened for the Cardinals and allowed two hits and one run over four innings. The bullpen followed and coughed up five runs over the final five frames. The Redbirds offense plated a couple more runs with Claudio Ramirez leading the way with two singles, one double, and one RBI, but extended their losing streak to three with the 6-4 loss.
June 11, 2019: The Cardinals Blue welcomed in the Orioles Two in the next game. Luis Oritz followed the Redbirds starting pitcher with four innings, allowing four hits, one run, and struck four out. Darlyn Del Villar lead the offense side with two singles, one double, and one RBI as the Cardinals pulled it out in the bottom of the ninth, 5-4.
June 12, 2019: The Cardinals Red hosted the Cubs Two and hoped to avoid a second straight series sweep. Both teams offenses plugged away at the others pitching staffs with a total of four home runs being hit. Diowill Burgos singled, homered, and drove in four runs with Fernando Brazoban adding two doubles and three RBIs. The Redbirds coughed up nine runs in the fourth and never rebounded in the 16-10 loss.
June 13, 2019: The Cardinals Blue visited the Angels in the next game. Gustavo J. Rodriguez pitched a solid five innings, giving up two hits, one earned run, two walks, and striking out three. The Redbirds plated three runs in the three runs in the fourth and two in the ninth led by Erik Pena who had one single, one double, and two RBIs. The Halos attempted a comeback with three in the aseventh but fell short as the Cardinals won 5-4.
June 13, 2019: The Cardinals Red, looking to end a four-game losing streak, welcomed in the Mets Two. Angel Cuenca was stellar in his latest start, going six scoreless frames for the Redbirds. Ramon Fernandez followed with two scoreless innings. The Cardinals scored one run in the first and fourth, then padded the lead with two more in the eighth. Albert Inoa singled, doubled, and drove in one run as the Redbirds doubled up the Mets 4-2.
June 14, 2019: The Cardinals Red visited the Mets Two and let loose offensively. The Redbirds scored nine of their total 13 runs in the third inning. Ludwin Jimenez started and allowed four hits and two earned runs over five innings. The Mets plated runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and three in the seventh but came up very short. Claudio Ramirez and Juan Sanchez each drove in three runs as the Cardinals won 13-6.
June 14, 2019: The Cardinals Blue hosted the Phillies Red in the next game. The Phils got things started with four runs in the first two frames, but the Redbirds knotted it up with four in the fourth. Dionys Rodriguez struck out four over two scoreless relief innings following the starter. Jose Zapata singled, doubled, and drove in one run but the bullpen gave up two more runs as the Phillies won 6-4.
June 15, 2019: The Cardinals Blue visited the Nationals in the final game of the week. The Redbirds jumped out in front early with three runs in the first two frames but the Nats did tie up in the third. William Miranda tossed two scoreless innings following the starter. Gustavo A. Rodriguez collected two singles, one walk, and three RBIs to lead the offense. The Cardinals plated seven more runs in the second half of the contest for the 10-4 victory.
June 15, 2019: The Cardinals Red welcomed in the Rangers Two for the finale of the week. The Redbirds took an early lead with four runs in the second then blew it up with four more in the sixth. However the Redbirds bullpen couldn't hold the game and coughed up ten runs over the final three frames. Sander Mora, Albert Inoa, and Diowill Burgos each contributed two RBIs a piece in the 13-10 loss.
Who's Hot:
Diowill Burgos (Red) extended his on-base streak to 12 games. The 18-year old left-handed hitter went 6-for-23 (.261) with one home run, seven RBIs, four runs, one stolen base, and four strikeouts. He played two games in right field (one outfield assist), two in left, and one as designated hitter. The September 1, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in home runs, RBIs, total bases, SLG, and OPS.
Angel Cuenca (Red) has not given up a run in his last four appearances (16 innings) which is continued from last season. The 17-year old started on June 13th and hurled six innings, allowing one hit, no runs, two walks, and struck three out for the winning decision (2-0). He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-7. The May 29, 2018 free agent signing leads all starters in ERA, WHIP, and strikeouts and is tied in wins and innings pitched.
Sander Mora (Red) pushed his on-base streak to 12 games with the help of collecting at least one hit in his last five contests. The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-22 (.409) with three doubles, three RBis, nine runs, two walks, four stolen bases, seven strikeouts, and two caught stealing. He played three games at shortstop (assisted in four double plays), two as designated hitter, and one at second base (assisted in one double play). The July 2, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in runs scored, walks, stolen bases, and tied for doubles.
Reinys Portillo (Blue) put together a solid start in his second of the season. The 18-year old right-hander opened in June 10th and went five innings allowing five hits, one unearned run, hit one batter, committed one throwing error, and struck out a season-high four. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-4. The July 28, 2018 free agent signing is tied for the team lead in innings pitched.
Claudio Ramirez (Red) picked up at least one hit in his last five games and extended hit on-base streak to ten games. The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 11-for-21 (.524) with three doubles, seven RBIs (five w/two-outs), four runs, one walk, one stolen base, and four strikeouts. He played four games in left field (one outfield assist and assisted in one double play) and one as designated hitter. The January 12, 2018 free agent signing is tied for the team lead in hits and doubles.
Gustavo A. Rodriguez (Blue) has a five-game hit streak to extended in the next week. The 19-year old right-handed hitter went 7-for-18 (.389) with two doubles, one triple, four RBIs, two runs, two walks, one sac fly, and three strikeouts. He played four games in right field (two outfield assists and one assisted in one double play) and one as designated hitter. The July 2, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in triples, RBIs, total bases, and tied for doubles.
Gustavo J. Rodriguez (Blue) did better in his second start and again only gave up one run. The 18-year old right-hander started on June 13th and allowed twohits, one unearned run, two walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck out three. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 6-to-6. The July 17, 2018 free agent singing leads the starting rotation with a 1.00 ERA and 0.89 WHIP.
Who's Not:
Fernando Brazoban (Red) will look to end his two-game hitless streak in the next week. The 17-year old right-hander hitter went 2-for-13 (.154) with two doubles, three RBIs (two w/two-outs), one run, one walk, and five strikeouts. The January 8, 2019 free agent signing played all three games in right field and committed one fielding error and one throwing error.
Yonael Dominiguez (Red) struggled with his control in his latest start. The 17-year old right-hander opened on June 12th and gave up six hits, six earned runs, five walks, threw one wild pitch, struck out one, and assisted in one double play for the losing decision (0-1). The February 11, 2019 free agent signing had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-1.
Ramon Fernandez (Red) followed up his best outing of the season with his worst of his pro career. The 20-year old right-hander hurled two scoreless innings on June 13th, walking two and stricking out three for the hold. Then on June 15th, he was thumped for five hits, seven earned runs, one walk, hit one batter, and one balk for the losing decision (0-1) after facing eight batters. The July 10, 2018 free agent signing had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-3.
Smith Vargas (Red) has only connected for two hits in his last seven games played. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 2-for-15 (.133) with one two-out RBI, one run, three walks, one stolen base, and three strikeouts. The January 8, 2019 free agent singining played all four games in centerfield and was slotted as leadoff man in the lineup.
Miguel Yedis (Red) struggled with his control after opening the season with a solid start. The 18-year old right-hander pitched on June 12th and gave up three hits, five earned runs, two walks, hit one batter, and threw three wild pitches. The September 1, 2017 free agent signing had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 0-to-1 and let both inherited runners score.

Josue Ramirez (Blue) has been out of action since June 4th and Miguel Maiz (Red) since June 8th.
Diego Velasquez (Blue) and Roblin Heredia (Red) only played in one game during this period.
Brandon Hernandez (Blue) made his pro debut on June 11th and played in three games. The 17-year old left-handed hitter went 1-for-11 (.111) with one walk, one hit by pitch, and five strikeouts.
Miguel Marcos (Red) made his pro debut on June 14th and played in two games. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 1-for-6 (.167) with three strikeouts.
