Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 6-10-19



The Cardinals Blue won their first game, lost their second, and finished the week off on a three-game winning streak.  The club is 4-1 and hold a half game lead for first place in the South Division.  They are 2-0 defending home and 2-1 on the road.

The Cardinals Red won their first four games of the season but fell in the their final three.  The club is 4-3 and are two games out of first place in the San Pedro Division.  They are 2-2 at home and 2-1 as the visitor.

Opening Week Round-Up:

June 1, 2019: Cardinals Red visited the Brewers and jumped out in front in the first inning with two runs on wild pitches.  Angel Cuenca started for the Redbirds and gave up only one hit and no runs, while striking out five in the first five frames.  Diowill Burgos doubled in two runs in the sixth to put the Cardinals up 4-0.  The Red team added another in the seventh and the bullpen gave two runs to the Brewers.  The Cardinals won 6-2.

June 3, 2019: The Cardinals Red hosted the Brewers in the second game of the season and the bats came alive.  The Redbirds scored two or more runs in four frames with Diowill Burges leading the way contributing a two-run homer in the sixth.  Fernando Brazoban and Smith Vargas each each legged out triples in the contest.  Ludwin Jimenez gave up seven hits ans two runs in the five-inning start.

June 3, 2019: The Cardinals Blue began their season on the road against the Angels.  The Halos took an early lead with two in the bottom of the first and held the Redbirds scoreless in the first four frames.  Darlin Moquete ended the Cardinals silence with a two-run homer in the fifth.  Gustavo A. Rodriguez plated three runs in the ninth to help the Blue team defeat the Angels 7-6.

June 4, 2019: The Cardinals Blue stayed on the road and faced off against the Yankees.  The bats were swinging for both teams as the Yankees spread runs out across the games and the Redbirds came in at the end.  Jose Rodriguez doubled and drove in three runs with Darlyn Del Villar adding two RBIs.  The Cardinals pushed late but fell short 12-10.

June 4, 2019: The Cardinals Red welcomed in the Tigers One and blew up the first inning.  The Redbirds scored five runs in the first and didn't let up as they plated another three in the third and two more in the sixth.  Diowill Burgos singled, doubled, homered, and drove in four runs for the Cardinals as they won 10-6.

June 5, 2019: The Cardinals Red traveled to play the Tigers in the next game and things stayed a little closer this time around.  The Redbirds started off with three runs in the first and the Tigers answered with two of their own.  The Red team added another run in the third and the bullpen silenced the Tigers until the final frame.  Miguel Maiz struck out three over two scoreless innings for the winning decision.  Alexander Samuel collected two singles and one RBI in the 4-3 victory over the Tigers.

June 5, 2019: The Cardinals Blue hosted the Nationals for their very own close game.  Gustavo J. Rodriguez made the start for the Redbirds and went four innings only allowing three hits and one unearned run.  Hancel Rincon tossed three scoreless innings towards the end for the Blue team.  Carlos Arcia hit a solo home run in the third, Leudy Pena hit a two-run homer in the sixth, and Diego Velasquez hit a solo homer in the seventh to help the Cardinals squeak by the Nationals 8-7.

June 6, 2019: The Cardinals Blue visited the Mets One for a nail biter.  Yordy Richard started for the Redbirds and went four inning innings, striking out seven and allowing one run.  Victor Villanueva, Luis Tena, and Cristoffer Zapata followed with a combined five scoreless innings.  The Blue team scored two runs courtesy of Luis Rodriguez and Diego Velasquez in the seventh for the 2-1 win.

June 6, 2019: The Cardinals Red hosted the Diamondbacks Two late inning close call.  Miguel Yedis struck out three and allowed one run in the opening four frames.  The Redbirds put up two runs in the third and two in the seven with the help of Claudio Ramirez.  The Red team couldn't secure the win as the bullpen coughed up four runs in the eighth for the 6-4 loss.

June 7, 2019: The Cardinals Red traveled to the Diamondbacks Two and extended the game an extra three frames.  Angel Cuenca opened with four scoreless innings for the Redbirds.  Each team's bullpens struggled to contain the runs late in the contest as nine runs were scored in the final three frames with errors and wild pitches playing a apart.  Bryan Matute collects four singles and three RBIs as the Cardinals lost 9-8 in 12 innings.

June 7, 2019: The Cardinals Blue hosted the Phillies Red for somewhat pitcher's duel.  Wilmer Ortega struck out four and allowed one run in the opening four and third innings for the Redbirds.  William Miranda and Nelson Prada combined for six strikeouts over the final four scoreless frames.  Hansel Otamendi, Darlyn Del Villar, and Gustavo A. Rodriguez each contributed a RBI in the 4-2 victory over the Phillies.

June 8, 2019: The Cardinals Red went out on the road to face the Phillies White.  The Phils jumped out in front early with two runs in the first and silenced the Redbirds offense with five scoreless frames.  The Red team finally got on the scoreboard with some defensive miscues by the White team.  The Cardinals plated five runs in the sixth with help from Jesus Orecchia, who had two RBIs.  The Phillies clawed back and scored five of their own in the next two frames and shutdown the Redbirds offense for the 7-5 win.

June 8, 2019: Cardinals Blue @ Twins was postponed

Who's Hot:

Diowill Burgos (Red) has a seven-game on base streak as he's been walked one or more times in each.  The 18-year old left-handed hitter went 8-for-23 (.348) with three doubles, two home runs, eight RBIs (four w/two-outs), seven runs, ten walks, one stolen bases, three strikeouts, and one caught stealing.  The September 1, 2017 free agent signing has played three games in right field, two in left, and two as designated hitter.

Angel Cuenca (Red) made two solid starts for the Cardinals without giving up a run.  The right-hander started on June 1st and tossed five scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out five for the winning decision (1-0).  June 7th he gave up four hits, no runs, three walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck out four over four innings.  The May 29, 2018 free agent signing had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 11-to-3.

Bryan Matute (Red) has reached base safely in his first five games of the season with hits collected in the last three.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-16 (.500) with one double, six RBIs (one w/two-outs), one run, five walks, two stolen bases, and two strikeouts.  The August 4, 2018 free agent signing played four games at shortstop (assisted in three double plays) and one at second base.

Hansel Otamendi (Blue) opened the season with a four-game on-base streak and has connected for a hit in three of those four.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 6-for-14 (.429) with two doubles, three RBIs, six runs, three walks, one sac fly, one stolen base, two strikeouts, and grounded into two double plays.  The April 17, 2019 free agent signing played all four games in centerfield.

Nelson Prada (Blue) has given up a run in two of his first two relief appearances this season.  The left-hander reliever pitched one scoreless inning on June 5th, hitting one batter for the winning decision (1-0).  On June 7th, he struck out four and walked one batter over two hitless/scoreless innings for the win (2-0).  The August 30, 2016 free agent signing had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-1.

Who's Not:

Jesus Jaquez (Red) has given up two runs in each of his relief appearances this season.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched on June 3rd and gave up one hit, two earned runs, two walks, and threw one wild pitch over one inning.  He then pitched on June 8th, allowing one hit, two earned runs, hit one batter, threw one wild pitch, and struck one out over two innings.  The January 8, 2019 free agent signing had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-2.

Engels Martinez (Blue) has let walks hurt him early in the season.  The 17-year old right-hander pitched in relief on June 4th and gave up one hit, five earned runs, three walks, hit one batter, and struck two out.  The October 20, 2018 free agent signing has a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 0-to-1 and held two inherited runners on base.

Sander Mora (Red) has carried over from last season with a slow start.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 2-for-24 (.083) with five runs, five walks, two stolen bases, and eight strikeouts.  The July 2, 2017 free agent signing played three games at shortstop (assisted in two double plays), two at second base (assisted in one double play), and one as designated hitter.

Dionys Rodriguez (Blue) has also let the walks hurt him early in the season.  The 18-year old left-hander was called for relief on June 5th and he allowed three hits, six earned runs, one home run, four walks, one balk, and struck two out.  June 7th, he faced five batters and gave up no hits, one unearned run, and two walks.  The May 14, 2018 free agent signing has a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-0 and let one inherited runner score.

Juan Sanchez (Red) has gone hitless in his first two games of the season.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 0-for-7 (.000) with one walk, one hit by pitch, and four strikeouts.  The July 28,. 2018 free agent signing was designated hitter one game and catcher in the next, where he committed one fielding error, one passed ball, and had six bases stolen on him.
