Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 7-22-19



The Cardinals Blue lost their first two games of the week and ended on a three-game winning streak.  The club is 24-13 and are one and a half games out of first place in the South Division behind two teams.  They are 10-6 at home and 14-7 on the road.

The Cardinals Red split their schedule, losing the first two, winning the middle three, and losing the last.  The club is 17-24 and are eight and a half games out of first place in the San Pedro Division.  They are 9-12 defending home, 8-12 as the visitor, and are 23 games from being eliminated from postseason play.

Week In Review:

July 15, 2019: The Cardinals Red opened the week up on the road ageist the Cubs Two.  The Redbirds took an early lead with a couple runs in the first five frames and planted three on in the sixth.  The Cubs took advantage of the errors, came back, and won it in extras.  Edgar Manzo struck out six and allowed one run over five and two-thirds in the start.  Smith Vargas singled twice, doubled, tripled, and drove in three runs.

July 16, 2019: After having a couple days off, the Cardinals Blue opened their week visiting the Angels.  The game was tied 1-1 until the Halos plated four runs in the fifth then two more in the sixth as they easily won 8-3.  Brandon Hernandez singled and drove in one run.

July 16, 2019: The Cardinals Red hosted the Cubs Two in the second game of the series.  Both teams had the same amount of hits but the Cubs were able to push one more run across the plate in the contest.  Miguel Maiz pitched one scoreless frame in the ninth.  Albert Inoa singled, doubled, and drove in one run.

July 17, 2019: The Cardinals Blue stayed on the road and faced off against the Yankees.  The Redbirds jumped out in front early with four runs over the fourth and fifth innings, but the Yankees took aim at the bullpen and plated seven runs in the second half of the contest for the win.  Gustavo J. Rodriguez struck out a career-high eight in the five-inning start, for probably his best start of his career.  Brandon Hernandez and Gustavo A. Rodriguez each knocked in two runs, and Leudy Pena hit a solo home run.

July 17, 2019: The Cardinals Red opened a two-game series against the Mets Two, first game defending home field.  The Redbirds opened the first inning with four runs, then plated four more over the fourth and fifth inning, and added four more in the eighth for the victory.  Yonael Dominguez opened and hurled four and a third scoreless innings.  Claudio Ramirez and Erick Thomas each drove in three runs, and Diowill Burgos contributed two RBIs.

July 18, 2019: The Cardinals Red visited the Mets Two for the second game.  The game was close from start to finish but the Redbird pulled it off by taking capitalizing on Mets errors.  Hector De Los Santos closed out the game striking out four over the final two frames.  Smith Vargas and Sander Mora each had three hits and one RBI.

July 18, 2019: The Cardinals Blue welcomed in the Nationals, looking to end their losing streak.  The Nats took an early lead with three runs in the first two frames, but the Redbirds marched back to plated four in the fifth and three more to round out the win, while still committing six errors.  Dionys Rodriguez pitched two scoreless innings towards the end of the game.  Darlyn Del Villar singled twice, doubled, walked, and drove in two runs.

July 19, 2019: The Cardinals Blue went on the road to face the Mets One.  The Redbirds jumped out in front early with four runs in the first five frames.  The Mets came back to make things interesting but ended up falling in the ninth.  Americo Lugo struck out one and held the bases loaded in the final one and third innings for the save.  Darlin Moquete singled, tripled, and knocked in three runs.

July 19, 2019: The Cardinals Red began a two-game series against the Rangers Two, first at home.  The Redbirds offense scored three runs in the first three frames, but the Rangers didn't go silently as they took the lead in the seventh with four runs.  The Cardinals plated four runs in the eighth and held off the Rangers for the win.  Sander Mora singled, tripled, walked twice, and drove in two runs.

July 20, 2019: The Cardinals visited the Rangers Two in the second game of the two-game set.  The Rangers returned fire in the second game and doubled up the Redbirds 8-4.  Hansel Marcelino and Augusto Calderon combined to strike out five batters over the final two scoreless frames.  Sander Mora singled and knocked in one run.

July 20, 2019: The Cardinals Blue hosted the Phillies Red in the final game of the week.  The Redbirds exploded with nine runs to opened the contest and added two more in the eight in the easy victory.  Wilmer Ortega struck out two and allowed one run in the six inning start.  Darlin Moquete and Gustavo A. Rodriguez each drove in three runs.

Who's Hot:

Diowill Burgos (Red) will look to extend his ten-game on-base and four-game hit streak in the next week.  The 18-year old left-handed hitter went 8-for-16 (.500) with three doubles, two RBIs (one w/two-outs), five runs, three walks (one intentional), one stolen base, and four strikeouts.  He played two games in right field, one in left, and one as designated hitter.  The September 1, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs, total bases, OBP, SLG, AVG, and OPS.

Augusto Calderon (Red) has thrown three consecutive scoreless outings and five in his last seven.  The 18-year old right-hander was called from the pen on July 17 and struck out a career-high five and allowing no hits or runs and uncorked one wild pitch over one and two-thirds innings for the winning decision (1-2).  On July 20, he struck out all three batters faced.  The April 25, 2018 free agent signing held both inherited runners on base.

Darlin Moquete (Blue) will look to add on to his 14-game on-base streak which includes a six-game hitting streak.  The 19-year old  right-handed hitter went 6-for-11 (.545) with one double, one triple, one home run, six RBIs (one w/two-outs), four runs, one walk, two hit by pitches, two sac flies, one stolen base, and two strikeouts.  He played one game in right field, one in left, and one in center.  The April 21, 2018 free agent signing leads the team in AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS, and stolen bases, and is tied for the lead in home runs.

Sander Mora (Red) ended this last week on a three-game hit streak.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-26 (.308) with one double, one triple, five RBIs (one w/two-outs), four runs, five walks, four stolen bases, and two strikeouts.  He played three games at shortstop (assisted in two double plays and one throwing error), one as designated hitter, one at second base (assisted in one double play and one fielding error), and one split between both second and third base.  The July 2, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in runs scored and stolen bases.

Wilmer Ortega (Blue) ended his scoreless streak by giving up one run in his latest start and has earned a win in his last four consecutive outings.  The 18-year old right-hander opened on July 20 and hurled a career-high six innings, giving up three hits, one earned run, one home run, two walks, hit one batter, threw one wild pitch, and struck two out for the winning decision (4-0).  The April 17, 2019 free agent signing leads the team in wins.

Gustavo J. Rodriguez (Blue) has thrown two consecutive scoreless appearances.  The 18-year old right-hander started on July 17 and threw five scoreless innings allowing only one walk and struck out a career-high eight.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-4.  The July 17, 2018 free agent signing leads the team in innings pitch and all starters in ERA, WHIP, and strikeouts.

Smith Vargas (Red) turned things around this week with a six-game on-base and three-game hit streak.  The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 10-for-19 (.526) with two doubles, two triples, five RBIs (one w/two-outs), six runs, five walks, one hit by pitch, three stolen bases, and two strikeouts.  He played four games in centerfield (two outfield assists) and one as designated hitter.  The January 8, 2019 free agent signing saw his AVG jump over 50 points this period.

Who's Not:

Erik Pena (Blue) has not connected for a hit in his last five games but has reached safely in two straight.  The 19-year old switch-hitter went 0-for-4 (.000) with two runs, two walks, one hit by pitch, two sacrifices, and one stolen base.  He played one game in left field (one outfield assist) and one at third base.  The July 12, 2016 free agent signing has seen his AVG drop almost 100 points since his hitless streak started.

Reinys Portillo (Blue) has been hit hard in his last two starts, including his worst of his career during this period.  The 18-year old right-hander opened on July 16 and allowed seven hits, five earned run, one walk, and struck three out over four innings for the losing decision (2-3).  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-3.  The July 28, 2018 free agent signing has hurled nine innings in his last two starts, giving up 11 hits, nine runs (eight earned), three walks, and striking out nine.

Claudio Ramirez (Red) has struck out two or more times in his last four games and not connected for a hit in last two.  The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 3-for-18 (.167) with one double, three RBIs (two w/two-outs), four runs, one walk, one sacrifice, and 12 strikeouts.  He played two games in left field and two as designated hitter.  The January 12, 2018 free agent signing has gone 8-for-59 (.136) since his AVG topped out at .327 on June 20th.

Ronald Suarez (Blue) has not been able to record an out in his last two relief appearances.  The 19-year old right-hander faced three batters on July 17 and walked all and watched all three score.  The September 1, 2017 free agent signing has faced eight batters in his last two games and coughed up one hit, eight earned runs, seven walks, and thrown two wild pitches.

Victor Villanueva (Blue) has given up one or more runs in his last three appearances.  The 18-year old right-hander struggled on July 16 as he allowed five hits, two earned runs, hit one batter, and threw one wild pitch over two innings.   Then on July 20, he gave up three hits, one earned run, and hit one batter.  He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 3-to-2 and let hit only inherited runner score.  The July 3, 2018 free agent signing has coughed up nine hits, four earned runs, hit two batters, and struck one out over four innings since seeing his ERA dip to 0.79.

Notes:

Josue Ramirez (Blue) has been out of action since June 4th, Alexander Samuel (Red) since July 10th, Jose Rodriguez (Blue) since July 12th, and Roblin Heredia (Red) since July 15th.  Allinson Benitez (Blue) and Michael Ozoria (Blue) have yet to make an appearance this season.

Hansel Marcelino was transferred from Blue to Red on July 18th.

Miguel Maiz (Red) returned on July 16th after missing 15 days.  The 18-year old right-hander pitched a scoreless inning while allowing just one hit.

Miguel Yedis (Red) returned on July 18th after missing 15 days.  The 18-year old right-hander gave up two hits, one earned run, and one walk.

Diorys Guerrero (Red) returned on July 20th after missing 19 days.  The 18-year old left-hander coughed up four hits, four earned runs, three walks, hit one batter, and struck one out for the losing decision (0-2).

Leudy Pena (Blue) has reached base safely in 24 straight games, Jose Zapata (Blue) in 19 straight games, Brandon Hernandez (Blue) in 14 games, Fernando Diaz (Blue) in seven games, and Bryan Matute (Red) in six games.

Elvin DeJesus (Blue) has an eight-game hitting streak and Luis Rodriguez (Blue) in five games.
