Historical Trade Rumors: How Expos Missed Out On Albert Pujols

When the 1994 MLB season was suspended in August because of a labor dispute, the Montreal Expos had an MLB-best 74-40 record. Considering that the team employed Pedro Martinez, Ken Hill, Jeff Fassero, Larry Walker, Moises Alou, Cliff Floyd and Marquis Grissom, that shouldn't be especially surprising. The 1994 season, of course, never resumed and Felipe Alou's squad never got a chance to win the first World Series title in franchise history.

Adam Wainwright Set For Game One, But Cardinals Have A Backup; Scott Rolen Returns; Yasiel Puig Sits; Extra Bases

The Cardinals intend to start ace Adam Wainwright for Game 1 of the National League championship series on Saturday, as scheduled, but they have prepared Lance Lynn as an alternative if the club does not feel Wainwright is ready for the game or is unable to pitch deep into it.
Post-Dispatch

With their ability to close out the National League Division Series against the Dodgers in four games, the Cardinals were able to avoid sending their ace back to the mound in a series-elimination game. That means Adam Wainwright will be ready to take the mound in Game 1 of the NL Championship Series against the San Francisco Giants.

Cardinals-Cubs Have Discussed Matt Garza

A Cardinals-Cubs trade would be a real rarity. The last major-league trade between the two rivals occurred almost 11 years ago, in August 2002, when Jeff Fassero was the big name going from the Cubs to the Cards.

QUESTION: Many players put up big numbers in the walk year of their contract. Do you foresee Albert Pujols putting up even bigger numbers this season with free agency pending, or with Pujols’ numbers being so consistent across the board from year to year, do you see him having a typical Albert year?

Politics Of Trading Within The NL Central

For perspective, consider that the last time the St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros found an agreeable deal between two division rivals, the pitcher involved had a recognizable name and a place in history with one of the franchises. He was a fan favorite. He had been the ace of the staff. He was disappointed by losing.

Cardinals Must Go To Work Vs. Brett Myers, Astros

Three out of every five days, the Cardinals get spoiled by sending one of the best starting pitchers in baseball to the mound. And on the other two days in that cycle, they have to work for everything they get. St. Louis will sharpen its work ethic again Saturday, when struggling veteran Jeff Suppan will take the ball against Houston and face off against fellow right-hander Brett Myers.
