Why The Phillies Have To Keep Ryan Howard

In Wild Game, Shelby Miller Joins Notable Group Of Pitchers In Outfield

Extra innings acquaints a man with strange bedfellows, as noted baseball fan William Shakespeare once wrote. Sunday's 13-inning, five-hour-and-25-minute marathon between the Diamondbacks and Pirates—won by Pittsburgh 12–10—had plenty of that, capped by Shelby Miller's first professional foray into the outfield. Though he's hardly the first pitcher in recent memory to be pressed into outfield duty (the Rockies' Jason Gurka played an inning there on Sept. 15), he has nonetheless joined a notable fraternity.

Joe McEwing Could be Considered For Mariners MGR Vacancy

Others who may get consideration are former Padres manager Bud Black, Angels third-base coach Gary DiSarcina, and White Sox third-base coach Joe McEwing. Another name being tossed around is former major-league catcher Scott Servais, who was an assistant general manager under Dipoto with the Angels. But he has no managing experience and is more likely to come to Seattle in an executive capacity. Don’t be surprised if Raul Ibanez, a finalist for the Rays’ managerial opening last year, gets a look. And if Dan Wilson is interested, it would be hard to not give the former Mariners catcher due diligence.

Marlins & Brewers Interested In Allen Craig

Allen Craig, 1B/OF, Red Sox — The Marlins have Craig on their list of possible acquisitions as they pursue a righthanded hitter to play first base. They’re doing their homework on the 30-year-old, who had very good years with St. Louis before he was sent to Boston at last year’s trading deadline. Milwaukee also has some interest in Craig in a platoon with Adam Lind.

Yankees Interested In Raul Ibanez

The Yankees also must settle on a hitting coach and a first base coach. They are interested in talking to Raul Ibanez about the hitting coach gig, and Dante Bichette, one of Joe Girardi’s best friends, and James Rowson loom as other potential candidates. There’s speculation that Rowson could work as an assistant hitting coach. Former Rookie of the Year Pat Listach, who was the Astros’ third base coach last year, could be a candidate for the first base coach job.

Roc Nation Ties Have Red Sox Looking To Deal Yoenis Cespedes

Yoenis Cespedes’ decision to switch agents to Roc Nation is said to increase the likelihood the Red Sox will trade the Cuban slugger this winter while they can still get something substantial in return for him with his free agency pending after next season. If so, this poses yet another intriguing option — along with free agent Michael Cuddyer — for Mets GM Sandy Alderson as he seeks to fill his one big need, an impact bat in right field.
