Historical Trade Rumors: How Expos Missed Out On Albert Pujols
When the 1994 MLB season was suspended in August because of a labor dispute, the Montreal Expos had an MLB-best 74-40 record. Considering that the team employed Pedro Martinez, Ken Hill, Jeff Fassero, Larry Walker, Moises Alou, Cliff Floyd and Marquis Grissom, that shouldn't be especially surprising. The 1994 season, of course, never resumed and Felipe Alou's squad never got a chance to win the first World Series title in franchise history.

Why Andres Galarraga Was A Bust With Cardinals
Seeking an upgrade at first base, the Cardinals gambled on Andres Galarraga, hoping he wasn’t an out-of-shape retread who couldn’t handle the slider and instead still was an elite hitter who just needed a nurturing environment and a stretch of good health.

Jamie Moyer: Short Stay With Cardinals In Long Career
When the Cardinals acquired Jamie Moyer, he was projected to pitch in their farm system. Moyer persevered and earned a spot in the Cardinals’ starting rotation, but instead of becoming a feel-good story, he went winless in seven starts. At 28, his big-league pitching career appeared near an end.

Michael Wacha In Ace Company With Near-Miss No-Hitter
With his dazzling performance Tuesday night in which he commanded 26 outs before permitting a hit – the fourth ninth-inning no-hitter broken up this season – Michael Wacha turned in a mirror opposite of Shelby Miller‘s gem from May 10. Miller, as you may recall, gave up a hit in the first at-bat of the game, then registered 27 outs in shutting out the Rockies. (He even bookended the performance by ending the game by striking out Eric Young, the man who claimed the only hit leading off the game.)

Carlos Beltran's Opening-Day Sizzle Finally Fizzles
Monday night was Carlos Beltran’s 13th opening day game. And, given the fact that most teams throw their best pitcher in those contests, the Cardinals right fielder’s career opening-day average heading into Monday’s contest against Arizona, .333 (17 for 51), was significant.

A while back, when I was talking about the worst closers ever, a couple of readers questioned my singling out of Mike Williams and Tony Cloninger. In light of those comments, I thought I'd take this opportunity to do two things:
