Cardinals Release Four More, Activate Kyle Mura

According to Baseball America, the St. Louis Cardinals organization has released four more minor leaguers during the time period between May 2-9.

Released were Carlos Gonzalez, Jose Penaloza, Adam Prange, and Senger Peralta all pitchers competing for roster spots in extended spring training.

Gonzalez, 20, was signed by the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent on August 4, 2005 out of the country of Panama. The right-hander spent three seasons in the organization pitching for the DSL Cardinals in 2006, GCL Cardinals in 2007, and Johnson City Cardinals last season. He complied a 7-5 record, 5.22 ERA, and one save in the farm system. And allowed 113 hits, 70 runs (64 earned), ten home runs, 44 walks, and struck out 129 over 110.1 innings during his tenure. During the 2008 season, Gonzalez struck out a season-high eight on July 9 in 3.2 innings.

Penaloza, 20, was signed by the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent on July 27, 2006 out of the country of Venezuela. The right-hander pitched his first two season in the organization with the VSL Cardinals and in 2008 was promoted to the GCL Cardinals for the season. He complied a 3-2 record and 7.92 ERA, allowing 91 hits, 70 runs (56 earned), three home runs, 52 walks, and struck out 40 over 63.2 innings.

Prange, 21, was a 48th round (1,436th overall) pick by the Cardinals in the 2008 amateur draft out of South Mountain Community College (AZ). He was assigned to the Gulf Coast League after signing and made 15 relief appearances for the club, putting together a 1-2 record, 6.92 ERA, and earned three saves. The right-hander allowed 16 hits, 14 runs (ten earned), one home run, 13 walks, and struck out nine over 13 innings.

Peralta, 20, was signed by the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent on September 26, 2004 out of the country of Venezuela. He was assigned to the Dominican Summer League in 2005 and made the move to the Johnson City Cardinals for the next two seasons. The left-hander had a 2.70 ERA and struck out 36 over 40 innings in DSL. In his two active seasons at JC, he made 18 appearances (ten starts), posting a 2-6 record and 5.69 ERA. Peralta allowed 61 hits, 46 runs (39 earned), seven home runs, 32 walks, and struck out 63 over 61.2 innings. He spent the entire 2008 season on the 60-day disabled list while assigned to Johnson City for a third straight season.

Other releases announced in the BA post were David Brito (VSL), Carlos Noguera (VSL), Brandon Buckman (Springfield), Brian Buck (Quad Cities), and Charles Kingrey (Palm Beach).

In addition to the above releases, the Springfield Cardinals activated Kyle Mura from the 7-day disabled list.

Mura, 24, was placed on the disabled list on April 30 with a sprained right elbow after posting a 1-0 record and 8.18 ERA in four starts.

He made his return Monday night, entering the game in the 6th inning and pitching one frame, giving up three hits, one earned run, one intentional walk, and striking out one.

There will be no corresponding move since there was already an open spot on the roster after Mike Folli was promoted to the Memphis Redbirds earlier last week.

Vuch Report: Cardinals Minors Spring Game Reports March 28

It’s a lefty parade for Memphis today. A man-child goes boom, a Brett Wallace goes boom-boom-boom and the farm goes 2-for-5.
Future Redbirds

Saturday’s opponents: Five games on the Marlins’ side of the complex.
Sunday’s opponents: New York Mets (Memphis and Springfield at Port St. Lucie with Palm Beach and Quad Cities at Jupiter).
The Cardinal Nation

However the St. Louis Cardinals third base position shakes out at the major-league level, it seems certain that first-round pick Brett Wallace will begin this season at Class AA Springfield. Few think that he will stay there for long.
