Rick Sutcliffe Symbolized Sad State Of Cardinals In 1994

Rick Sutcliffe is, by all accounts, a smart and personable man who had a first-rate career as a pitcher in the major leagues. But his year with the Cardinals reflects how distressed the proud franchise had become in the final years of Anheuser-Busch ownership.

Mitch Boggs' Latest Blunder Spoils Michael Wacha's Special Debut

Before Thursday night’s game against Kansas City, Cardinals reliever Mitchell Boggs had allowed at least one run in seven of 18 games he’d been in this season, or 39 percent of the time. He had saved two games, blown two saves and lost two games. Yet manager Mike Matheny saw fit to bring him into the ninth inning of a 2-1 game, a lead which Boggs promptly coughed up.

Jaime Garcia Extends Cardinals Best Starting Streak Since 1993

The St. Louis Cardinals are working on run of five consecutive starts of seven innings allowing two or fewer runs.

On a day when St. Louis Cardinals second-guessers are out in force following Saturday afternoon-night’s exciting, yet ultimately disappointing 20-inning home loss to the New York Mets, I want to ensure an exceptional outing by 23-year-old left-hander Jaime Garcia is not lost.

Adam Wainwright Wins 2009 Allen Watson Award

Over the last month at Scout.com, we have been consumed with awards across the St. Louis Cardinals system with a new one each day and several more to go. They are the standard “best of” honors which you would expect for the best hitters and pitchers and the like. Others recognize top defenders as well.

Checking The Numbers: Whiffing The Pitcher, Part Two

Earlier this month we took a look at pitcher-on-pitcher violence, computing the rates at which hurlers fan their counterparts and seeing how the results compared to overall strikeout rates. Two stats were introduced: PW%, which divides pitcher whiffs by pitcher plate appearances, and PWO%, the rate of whiffing pitchers as a measure of the overall tally.

DG's 10@10: Cardinals Collapsing Into Cliches

The St. Louis Cardinals showed a pulse offensively Tuesday night in Florida, but it still wasn’t enough as they failed to score more than three runs for the 12th time in 16 games. They have produced the fewest runs and the fewest baserunners in baseball since the beginning of May. They have the lowest on-base percentage (.276) this month in the National League.

Pitchers Slugging PCT

In the eighth inning of a rather usual July game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen stepped into the box and faced Bucs lefty Joe Beimel. Isringhausen had come in to close out what was a 9-6 ballgame, but a turn of the lineup had put a bat in his hand with the bases loaded.
