The Best Hitter In Baseball Is A 17-Year old Cuban
At the opening of this year’s July 2nd international signing period, the Cardinals signed Malcom Nuñez- a 17-year-old third baseman from Cuba. They sent him to the Dominican Summer League, where he put together the best offensive season in recent professional baseball history. Before we can marvel at his incredible hitting talent, it’s important to recognize two developments in international amateur baseball that made Nuñez’ season possible.

Padres Traded David Freese For Jim Edmonds This Day In 2007
This day in 2007, the Padres acquired center fielder Jim Edmonds from the Cardinals in exchange for a relatively unknown minor league third baseman by the name of David Freese. The trade blew up in San Diego's face nearly immediately when Edmonds fell flat on his face in every aspect of the game, and Freese did his part to ensure that Padres fans had insult added to their injury for years to come.

Jose Contreras Has No Intentions Of Retiring
Jose Contreras is 42 years old and had back problems last season, but he has no interest in calling it a career. He was a big part of the World Series champion White Sox in 2005 and is back with the Rangers hoping to win another title.\

Coco Crisp Reaches Base Safely in 14 Of 19 Games, Second Consecutive Three-Hit Game
Crisp has hit safely in 14 of 19 games this season and leads the team with eight stolen bases and 16 runs -- three of which came Sunday. He also made a remarkable catch in center field, when he slammed into the wall to rob Miguel Olivo of an extra-base hit off A's starter Brett Anderson to lead off the sixth.

Will The Padres Back End Of The Bullpen Stay Intact?
For now, yes. It appears the Padres will open the 2011 season with Luke Gregerson, Mike Adams and two-time All-Star closer Heath Bell at the back of their bullpen. The bullpen, of course, was one of the Padres' biggest strengths in 2010 and it had the lowest ERA among relief corps (2.78). Hoyer received plenty of hits on all three this winter, though he resisted in moving them. If the Padres ever opt to trade Bell, Adams looks like a fit to close.
