MLB Notebook: Shelby Miller Joins Elite Company

Of all the regular-season games played between 1916-2013, 148 of them witnessed a starting pitcher end his day with the following line: at least nine innings pitched, no more than one hit allowed and no runs or walks surrendered. Two of these triumphs -- both assembled before Jackie Robinson crashed through the game's color barrier -- saw that starting hurler unable to add even one strikeout to his illustrious line; curiously, those two dominant and yet not dominant performances came from right arms associated with the Reds: Si Johnson in 1933 and Bucky Walters 11 years later (coincidentally, both against the Braves). Of these 148 games, a mere 13 of them bundled at least 12 strikeouts to add to the luster of the feat.

Three major league general managers said they believe superstar Albert Pujols, who can be a free agent at year's end, will return to the Cardinals and sign a long-term deal with them after the season. Although none of the three professed to possess any inside information on the subject, their sentiments would appear to be the prevailing belief in baseball now.

Tony LaRussa, Cardinals Ready For Challenge

If I didn’t know better, I’d almost think that Tony La Russa was loving this.

He’s not, of course. He would much rather get 30 starts from right-hander Adam Wainwright than none. He aches for Wainwright, personally and professionally, aches for his team.

For Cardinals, Fifth Starter Likely To Come From Within

Simple humanity dictates that just about everyone in the Cardinals organization still feels sympathy for Adam Wainwright. The realities of baseball, however, mandate that it's already past time to figure out what's next.
With slim pickings available on the free-agent market, the St. Louis Cardinals plan to give somebody already in camp every opportunity to win the rotation spot opened by the injury of Adam Wainwright.
