Jake Odorizzi Confident But Cautious With 2020 Rotation

When Jake Odorizzi sees the injury attrition already seizing the Yankees at this point in the spring, he's reminded of the most important goal for the Twins' starters ahead of the regular season: Just stay healthy.

The Cardinals Are Window Shoppers In Baseball's Free Agent Marketplace

Evidently, baseball’s winter spender freeze is thawing. Actually a few wildly aggressive teams, and especially agent Scott Boras, are taking a blow torch to the ice cap … which isn’t to be confused with MLB’s de facto salary cap.

When it comes to the Cardinals’ description of an early-offseason approach that is not as singularly focused as previous winters — straight talk, no chaser — the annual General Manager Meetings offered a chance to do some comparative shopping because of the one thing agents and teams all shared for a few days.

Without A Tell-Tale Target, Cardinals Open GM Meetings Open 'Options,' Still Talking Marcell Ozuna, Adam Wainwright

In several recent offseasons the Cardinals have started with a clear, obvious opening as their north star and wandered through conversations with other teams and agents to find their man. They sought a shortstop one year, a right fielder another year, a center fielder later, a middle-order hitter one winter, and a middle-order hitter the next, too. This year is less linear, more side roads than thoroughfares, with no glaring opening they see to guide them.

Cardinals Not Likely To Wade Into Slow-Moving Free Agent Market

Unlike pro hockey, pro football and pro basketball, when the clock starts for free agency and you can see a rash of deals completed on the first eligible day as early as 12:01 p.m. or 4:01 p.m. or 6:01 p.m., depending on the sport, baseball assumes more of a sundial approach.

Free Agent Stock Watch: Rick Porcello

Relative to expectations, the 2019 season has been a major disappointment for the Red Sox. Many teams would be satisfied with Boston’s 64-59 record, but after winning 108 regular-season games and a World Series in 2018, what the club has done in the first four-plus months of this year looks rather underwhelming. The unspectacular performance of right-hander Rick Porcello is among the many reasons the Red Sox have fallen short of expectations this season.

Free Agent Stock Watch: Jake Odorizzi

The Twins have enjoyed quite a few nice surprises in the course of their strong start to the year. The output of righty Jake Odorizzi is certainly among them. Ranking Best Fits For Dallas Keuchel

Maybe, for a little bit, there was a time when the discussion about Dallas Keuchel was actually about Dallas Keuchel. If there was, however, it’s long since passed. For months now, the discussion has instead been larger commentary on the state of baseball’s free agency, on aging curves, on the semantics of rumor reporting, on the value of a compensatory draft pick.
