Pitching prospects are an inherently volatile group, one with more cautionary tales than success stories, but the type of impact that a highly touted young hurler can have on an organization’s long-term outlook cannot be overstated.

Michael Wacha Flashes Improved Velocity In First Mets Puting
Michael Wacha’s two scoreless innings Tuesday were a nice way to start his Mets career, but it’s the 94-96 mph he consistently flashed that resonated loudest.

Was It Michael Wacha's Final Home Start For Cardinals?; Keen Eyes In Dugout; Nationals Bring Heat
He said he didn’t realize it at the time, but Michael Wacha might have made his final regular-season start at Busch Stadium as a Cardinal on Sunday. His next two slated outings will be on the road, against Chicago and Arizona, and then he will become a free agent at the end of the season and is unlikely to be re-signed.

Jacob DeGrom, Mets Fall To Cubs For Sixth Straight Loss
Ever since Fred Wilpon first uttered the phrase 15 years ago, the idea of “meaningful games in September” has been a benchmark in Flushing. Only infrequently this decade have the Mets managed to reach the season’s final month still in contention -- most prominently in 2015, most recently in ’16, but not at all since.

Daily Redbird Review 8-29-19: Loss At Milwaukee Was A Valuable Reminder The Cardinals
FIRST PITCH: For the second time in a week the Cardinals couldn’t capitalize on a chance to sweep a three-game series from the Milwaukee Brewers. And Wednesday’s dull 4-1 loss in Milwaukee gave the Brewers a chance to feel better about their situation as the head into Thursday’s off day.

Mets Can't Recover From Noah Syndergaard's Rough Start
As the runs piled up, Mets manager Mickey Callaway remained stoic in the Citi Field dugout. For Callaway, there was no alternative. With such a significant portion of their playoff hopes tied up in this three-game series against the Cubs, the Mets were going to win or lose with Noah Syndergaard.

Noah Syndergaard's String Of At Least Seven Innings Ends At Six
Noah Syndergaard's streak of six consecutive starts with at least seven innings of work came to an end on Friday night and it was the bottom of the Royals’ lineup that had the biggest impact in keeping the Mets right-hander from again going deep into a game.

Michael Wacha's Future
Yesterday the Cardinals won their fifth straight game. They came against the Pirates and Royals, so they should have handled those teams and they did. Both teams have a combined -190 run differential after all (which sadly is better than the Tigers and Orioles who are at a combined -475 and yes you read that right). But here’s the thing: just because you should beat those teams doesn’t mean it will happen. Both teams do have a greater than 0% winning percentage after all.

The Cardinals Are In The Playoff Hunt, But Stayed Quiet At The Trade Deadline
The Cardinals were relatively quiet at the trade deadline, despite the fact that they are in the thick of a division race. They are 2.5 games behind the Cubs and were in first place as recently as August 1st. They are currently only half a game back of the last Wild Card slot, though the Mets’ inexplicable recent hot streak has them projected as the more likely winners of that second spot.

Michael Wacha To Rejoin Cardinals' Rotation Monday In Los Angeles; No Speeches Needed; Rick Ankiel: 'No More Surgery'; Kolten Wong On A Roll; Extra Bases
Now that Zack Greinke or Robbie Ray or Mike Minor or Noah Syndergaard or any other outside source is not going to be in the Cardinals’ rotation for the last two months of the season, manager Mike Shildt is proceeding with business as usual. After president of baseball operations John Mozeliak had said the other day that Michael Wacha, 6-4 with a 5.15 earned run average in 19 games (14 starts), would get a third chance to be in the rotation, Shildt said that day will come on Monday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

Frustrating Day For Cardinals Fans As No Help Is Coming
The Cardinals were painfully and uncharacteristically ordinary in 2016. And in 2017. And in 2018. But here, in 2019, was a chance to get out of the rut. The front office put together a good-enough club to battle the Cubs for division supremacy in late July. But the blatant reality was the Cards needed a little extra bolstering via a new starting pitcher. No problem, right? That trade acquisition would surely secure that they were back to being a playoff team, that the frustration of the past three long years had been worth enduring, because finally in 2019, they’d be in the postseason, once again.
