One Casualty Of 1918 Pandemic Was Catcher, Army Private Harry 'Husky' Glenn

In his hometown newspaper on Sept. 5, 1918, near the news of “Shoeless” Joe Jackson injuring his foot while playing in the Delaware River Shipbuilding League and a note about a Cubs owner and “hot dog king of the Federal League” losing a “fortune” close to $200,000, former Cardinals catcher Harry Glenn had the biggest headline.

Randal Grichuk & Stephen Piscotty Are Among MLB's Biggest Rookie Thumpers

Small wonder that St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny put Randal Grichuk in center field against the Cubs on Wednesday, despite his inability to throw the ball hard as he works his way back from an elbow injury. Nor was it a surprise when Stephen Piscotty busted a two-run double that lifted St. Louis to a much-needed win.

Was Shelby Miller's Gem The Best Ever For A Cardinals Pitcher?

Cardinals Leaders Of The 1920's

The 1920's came and after losing decades since the 1890's the Cardinals began to add to the pieces they started putting together in the teens. This led to 2 pennant and a World Championship!!! With Rogers Hornsby averaging a .400 BA over a 4 year period was one of the great feats in baseball history.

Cardinals Leaders Of The 1910's

During the teens in the last century several things happened that were important to the Cardinals and their future. First was the Robison brothers both died and left the team to Helene Britton who became the first woman owner in MLB history. She in turn sold the team to local owners who sold it to Breadon. Branch Rickey came into the fold and so did Rogers Hornsby. So, while the Cardinals were the only team not to win a pennant in the NL during the teens, the pieces were coming together to begin the ascendancy of the Redbirds to the top of the NL and eventually the World Championship.
