The Story Of How Tom Alston Integrated Cardinals

Two years after his professional baseball debut at the Class C level of the minor leagues, Tom Alston was the Opening Day first baseman for the Cardinals. Making that leap in such a short time would be a challenge for any prospect. Alston had the additional pressure of being the first black person to play for the Cardinals.

Gateway Arch Was Expensive At The Time But Vital To Downtown St. Louis

The Gateway Arch in St. Louis is one of the most recognizable symbols in the United States of America. Yale University is sponsoring a series of books on American icons. As is typical of so much writing these days, the authors have a jaundiced view of America.

Ten Random Photos From The Archives: Old School Cardinals

In honor of the Cardinals entering a September in which getting good postseason tickets ranks atop the fans' biggest concerns, here's a few old shots from St. Louis' rich history. The Rushmore Project (A Poll)

I watched Bob Costas’ interview with Willie Mays and Hank Aaron the other day, and while the whole of the interview is brilliant there was a line from it I couldn’t shake. Costas said if there were a Mt. Rushmore for baseball — and why isn’t there, already? — Mays and Aaron would both be on it. Presumably Babe Ruth would be riding shotgun.
