Batavia Loses 19-12 Slugfest; Begin Playoffs Tuesday

The playoff bound Batavia Muckdogs scored 12 runs and pounded out 16 hits but it wasn’t nearly enough as they lost to the Auburn Doubledays in a wild 19-12 slugfest Saturday night at Falcon Park.

Two In A Row: Batavia 5, Tri-City 4

For the first time all season, the Muckdogs finally won consecutive games. In a season full of win, loss, win, loss...etc, Batavia finally broke through with back-to-back wins against Tri-City by a score of 5-4. The contest took 11 innings to decide, with Batavia finally pushing the winning run across in the top half of the 11th. Batavia succeeded at the plate, putting 10 hits on the board. The hits, combined with 4 Tri-City errors added up to a Muckdogs' victory. The win pushes Batavia to 9-10 on the season and just 2 games out in the both the division and wild-card.

Eight In The 8th Sparked The Batavia Muckdogs: Batavia 11, Mahoning Valley 3

Going into the bottom half of the 8th inning, Muckdogs' fans were poised for the second straight extra inning game at Dwyer Stadium. The Muckdogs and their bats put a quick end to that thought, putting up 8 runs in the inning, securing the 11- 3 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The win puts Batavia at 5-6 on the year and still right in the mix of the Pinckney Division.

Cardinals 2010 Draft Day Three

The name Benes may be found again on a uniform in the Cardinals’ system.

Righthander Drew Benes, son of former Cardinals pitcher Andy Benes and nephew of former Cardinals pitcher Alan Benes, was taken by the Cardinals today in the 35th round of baseball’s amateur draft.

It has been awhile since a Benes has pitched for the Cardinals, but the organization made a move in that direction on Wednesday. On the third day of the annual amateur baseball draft, the Cardinals selected right-handed pitcher Drew Benes with their pick in the 35th round.

The Major League Baseball 2010 First-Year Player Draft was completed this afternoon. The St. Louis Cardinals selected 52 players in the 50-round draft. Among the Cardinals' selections were 26 pitchers, 12 infielders, 11 outfielders, and three catchers. The Redbirds chose 41 collegiate players and 11 high school prospects.
