Dominican Summer League Cardinals Notebook 8-12-19
The Cardinals Blue swept the schedule for the week, winning all five games. The club is 35-17 and are one game out of first place in the South Division. They are 18-8 defending home and 17-9 on the road and are 18 games away frombeing eliminated from postseason play.
The Cardinals Red took four of six games and ended the week on a loss. The clubs is 24-36 and are 13 games out of first place and are fighting to not end the season in the San Pedro Division cellar. They are 13-17 at home and 11-19 away are have been eliminated from postseason play.
Week In Review:
August 5, 2019: The Cardinals Red opened the week on the road against the Rangers Two. The Redbirds pitching overpowered the Rangers and held them to one run on four hits and struck 17 out as the offense plated eight runs and a guaranteed win in the second inning. Hancel Rincon struck out seven and allowed one run in the four-inning start. Hansel De Los Santos struck out six over two and two-thirds scoreless relief innings. Roblin Heredia singled, homered, and drove in three runs.
August 6, 2019: The Cardinals Blue opened their week up hosting the Angels. The Redbirds got things going with a run in the first but went silent at the plate as the Halos finally squeaked one across in the eighth to send into extras. The Cardinals pulled it off following the Angels' one-run tenth with two of their own. Reinys Portillo struck out a career-high nine over five scoreless innings. Darlyn Del Villar singled twice and knocked in one run.
August 6, 2019: The Cardinals Red welcomed in the Rangers for the second game of the two-game series. The Redbirds, for a second time, held the Rangers offense in check and out the victory with a run in the ninth. Edgar Manzo struck out five and allowed one run over five innings in the start. Roblin Heredia collected two singles and two RBIs.
August 7, 2019: The Cardinals Red began a new series against the Brewers with the first as the visitor. The Brewers plated one run in the first and went silent until the end of the contest as they let the Redbirds in the door but pulled off the win. Yonael Dominguez opened with four innings and one run. Sander Mora singled three times and drove in one run.
August 7, 2019: The Cardinals Blue continued their home field stretch with a contest against the Yankees. The Redbirds posted up three runs in the first, one in the third, and one in the sixth as the Yankees were only able to get two in. Engels Martinez had his best start of his career with four strikeouts and one run over six innings. Gustavo A. Rodriguez singled and drove in two runs.
August 8, 2019: The Cardinals Red hosted the Brewers in the second game of the series. The Redbirds jumped out in front early but the Brewers kept up as the game came down to the wire as the Cards won. Hemerson Cordero pitched three scoreless innings of relief to finish off the game. Fernando Brazoban doubled, tripled, and knocked in a career-high four runs.
August 8, 2019: The Cardinals Blue went out on the road to face the Nationals. The Redbirds offense took advantage walks and miscues and beat up on the Nats 12-4. Yordy Richard tossed four scoreless innings of relief. Darlin Moquete singled, tripled, walks, and drove in four runs.
August 9, 2019: The Cardinals Blue stayed out on the road to face the Mets one in the next contest. Redbirds had four pitchers hold the Mets scoreless as the offense plated six runs. Wilmer Ortega opened with four scoreless frames. Fernando Diaz singled twice and knocked in one run.
August 9, 2019: The Cardinals Red opened a new series, at home, against the Tigers One. The Redbirds offense erupted with three frames of double-digit scoring as the pitching held the Tigers to two runs. Luis Garcia closed out the contest with three scoreless frames. Roblin Heredia singled twice and drove in three runs.
August 10, 2019: The Cardinals Red ended the week and series a the visitors against the Tigers One. The Redbirds took a good lead with six runs in the second but the Tigers came back to send it into extras and pull the rug out from under their feet. Henry Gomez gave up only one run over the first five and two-thirds innings. Erick Thomas tripled and knocked in two runs.
August 10, 2019: The Cardinals Blue complete this weeks schedule bringing in the Phillies Red for a match. Both teams connected for the same amount of hits but only the Redbirds pushed across the majority of runs. Gustavo J. Rodriguez struck out five over six scoreless frames. Leudy Pena singled, doubled, and drove in three runs.
Who's Hot:
Luis Andujar (Red) currently has a seven-game hitting streak to build on. The 19-year old right-handed hitter went 9-for-23 (.391) with two doubles, three RBIs (one w/two-outs), three runs, two walks, two stolen bases, five strikeouts, and grounded into one double play. He played three games at first base (assisted in two double plays), two at third, and one as designated hitter. The September 1, 2017 free agent signing leads the team in hits.
Fernando Brazoban (Red) will look to build on his seven-game on-base and four-game hit streak in the next week. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 8-for-21 (.381) with two doubles, one triple, seven RBIs (five w/two-outs), two runs, four walks, one hit by pitch, and four strikeouts. He played all six games in right field. The January 8, 2019 free agent signing has gradually seen his AVG rise from a low point of .169 on July 18th to a now .216.
Fernando Diaz (Blue) will look to extend his 11-game on-base streak in the next week, which includes hitting safely in four straight. The 17-year old left-handed hitter went 7-for-18 (.389) with one home run, three RBIs (one w/two-outs), three runs, two walks, two hit by pitches, and five strikeouts. He played four games at first base (assisted in four double plays and one missed catch error) and one as designated hitter. The March 26, 2019 free agent signing leads the team in home runs and total bases.
Luis Garcia (Red) extended his scoreless appearances streak to five games. The 18-year old right-hander struck out one batter over one hitless/scoreless inning on August 6th for the winning decision (2-0). Then on August 9th, he went an extended three innings allowing three hits, no runs, and struck two out for the save (1). He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-4. The November 29, 2018 free agent signings steak includes nine innings total.
Roblin Heredia (Red) ended this past week with a 14-game on-base streak. The 17-year old left-handed hitter went 8-for-18 (.444) with one home run, eight RBIs (two w/two-outs), three runs, one walk, one hit by pitch, one sac fly, five strikeouts, and one caught stealing. He played three games at first base (assisted in one double play) and two behind the plate (threw out two of four base runners and one throwing error). The April 17, 2019 free agent has seen his AVG perk up from a .177 on July 15th to a now .243.
Edgar Manzo (Red) has been a pretty consistent starter that's been flying just under the radar this season. The 18-year old right-hander had his best start of his career on August 6th when pitched six innings and allowed five hits, one unearned run, two walks, and struck five out. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 4-to-7. The April 17, 2019 free agent signing has given up two or less runs in seven of his ten starts this season for a 3.35 ERA.
Reinys Portillo (Blue) bounced back after four struggling starts to throw one of the best of his career. The 18-year old right-hander opened on August 6th and tossed five scoreless innings allowing two hits, three walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck out a career-high nine. He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-2. The July 28, 2018 free agent signing gave up 17 hits, 14 runs (13 earned), two home runs, and six walks over the previous 18.2 innings.
Gustavo J. Rodriguez (Blue) threw one his best starts of his career. The 18-year old right-hander opened on August 10th and tossed six scoreless innings allowing six hits, one walk, hit two batters, and struck five out for the winning decision (4-0). He had a ground out-to-flu out ratio of 6-to-3. The July 17, 2018 free agent signing leads the team in innings pitched and strikeouts.
Who's Not:
Carlos Arcia (Blue) ended the week on a two-game hitless streak. The 17-year old switch-hitter went 1-for-10 (.100) with two runs, one walk, and four strikeouts. He played two games at shortstop (assisted in three double plays and one fielding error) and one at second base (assisted in one double play). The April 17, 2019 free agent signing is currently hitting .143 in the month of August.
Jesus Orecchia (Red) managed to end his hitless streak at seven games. The 18-year old right-handed hitter went 2-for-17 (.118) wt one triple, two RBIs, two runs, and two strikeouts. He played three game behind the plate (threw out two of three base runners and picked one off) and one at first base. The July 2, 2017 free agent signing is currently hitting .080 in August.
Erik Pena (Blue) also ended the week on a two-game hitless streak. The 19-year old switch-hitter went 1-for-11 (.091) with one RBI, one hit by pitch, two strikeouts, and was picked off. He played two games at third base and one at second. The July 12, 2016 free agent signing has seen his AVG come crashing down from a .375 on June 25th to .235.
Larimel Soriano (Red) has given up one or more runs in his last five of seven relief appearances. The 19-year old right-hander struck out two of three batters faced on August 5th. On August 9th, he had his worst outing of this season as he coughed up five hits, four earned runs, threw one wild pitch, and struck out two over one inning. He had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-0 and held two inherited runners on base. The September 8, 2016 free agent signing has seen his ERA rise from 0.98 on July 16th to 2.81.
Smith Vargas (Red), like Arcia and Pena, finished off the week without connecting for a hit in his last two games. The 17-year old right-handed hitter went 3-for-24 (.125) with two runs, one walk, two stolen base, and ten strikeouts. He played all five games in centerfield. The January 8, 2019 free agent signing is currently hitting .211 in August after putting up .280 in July.
