Yoan Lopez Is A Prospect Again
Not long after being signed out of Cuba in 2015, Yoan Lopez threw his first bullpen session at Diamondbacks camp. It was a minor event. Club executives came out to watch. Cameras followed his every move. In a scrum with reporters later that day, Lopez spoke of trying to reach the majors soon. “Pronto,” he said. “Muy pronto.”

It's Time The Owner Takes Some Blame For The Disappointing Diamondbacks
If Diamondbacks managing general partner Ken Kendrick wants to fire everyone in his front office, that is his prerogative. He could even justify such an upheaval, considering some of the questionable decisions made by chief baseball officer Tony La Russa, general manager Dave Stewart and Co. over the past two years.

Reds Pay Costly Price For Alfredo Rodriguez
The Reds having an agreement to sign 21-year-old Cuban shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez is no surprise. In November, I wrote that the Reds were heavily considered the favorites to sign Rodriguez. While Rodriguez is not the type of player worth going over your bonus pool to sign, the expectation at that time was that the Reds were going to push well beyond their pool to sign him anyway.

Jim Callis Examines Luke Weaver's Stuff, Potential
The day's best changeup belonged to right-hander Luke Weaver, the Cardinals' No. 7 prospect, who used it to record five of his nine outs. He allowed just a hit and a walk, though Salt River touched him for an unearned run thanks to a muffed grounder by third baseman Patrick Wisdom.

Tony LaRussa Happy With Progress Since His Hire With Diamondbacks
Tony La Russa's one-year anniversary with the Diamondbacks passed very quietly back on May 17. Not even La Russa marked the day of when he officially became the team's chief baseball officer, slotting in below President and CEO Derrick Hall and above then-General Manager Kevin Towers.

Playing With Yoan Moncada Money
Just the other day, an executive told me that he expected Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada to receive a signing bonus of $40 million to $50 million -- meaning that the total outlay, including a 100 percent tax, would be $80 million to $100 million.
