It is officially draft day in Major League Baseball, and as the clock has struck midnight on the east coast, it also means that teams can sign free agents who rejected the qualifying offer without having to surrender the draft pick compensation usually attached to QO picks. Thus, after months of speculation, Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel have been one of their chief obstacles to a new contract fall by the wayside.

Marwin Gonzalez & The Flattening Of Player Valuation
Everyone remembers the first sign of labor trouble. No, no, it wasn’t Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, nor was it JD Martinez a season ago. In fact the first sign that there was divergence between how front offices perceived a player and how players themselves (and agents) valued themselves was actually during the 2013-14 offseason, during the fiasco involving Stephen Drew and Kendrys Morales.

Dexter Fowler Could Become Available For Trade; Astros Were Interested In Yu Darvish; Yankees Interested In Alex Cobb
Some people believe Dexter Fowler could become available in trade. Fowler was their big free-agent signing last winter, but some believe they are open to at least listening. They already traded their big signing from the year before, Mike Leake, when the Mariners agreed to take on the majority of his deal. If they were to trade Fowler, they’d expect the same in such a deal – they’d pay only a small part of it. It isn’t known whether Fowler’s availability is dependent on a potential trade for Giancarlo Stanton, but it makes sense that it might.

Nationals Don't Extend Qualifying Offers To Howie Kendrick, Stephen Drew, Joe Blanton, Oliver Perez, Edwin Jackson, Ryan Raburn, Or Alejandro De Aza
The Nationals did not extend any qualifying offers before Monday's 5 p.m. ET deadline expired, as they had 12 players hit free agency. Despite that high number of free agents, Washington will return nearly all of its regulars from last season, so it was no surprise the Nats did not extend the one-year, $17.4 million contract to anyone.

Adam Wainwright Changes Positioning On Mound; Kevin Siegrist Searches; Extra Bases
Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright heard from a friend how, shortly after the righthander’s most recent start, Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez took to Twitter to write, how Wainwright “is going to reinvent himself and get people out. I wouldn’t worry about him in the beginning of the season.”

Stephen Drew Exits With Leg Injury Vs. Cardinals
Stephen Drew left before the start of the sixth inning of Tuesday's 8-3 win over the Cardinals, after suffering an apparent leg injury. Drew grabbed at the back of his right leg while running to first base after tapping a grounder back to the pitcher to end the fifth inning and never made it back on the field.

After Another Scuffle For Adam Wainwright, We Must Ask: Is This The New Reality?
With Adam Wainwright, maybe we have to get used to the idea that from now on he’ll be trying to get by on pitch-mixing guile, and sleight of hand, the curve ball on a good day, and his enormous competitive heart. Instead of gliding through starts, he’ll have to fight through them.

Stephen Drew Chose The Nationals Over Offers To Start Elsewhere
Stephen Drew could’ve leveraged his bounce-back 2016 season into a starting job as a free agent over the winter. There’s a market for veterans capable of playing three infield positions with some pop at the plate and tempting offers to start were presented to him. A few years ago, Drew probably would’ve snatched one and ended his time with the Nationals after one season.
