DG's 10@10: Going The Distance

Not too long after Busch Stadium III opened in downtown St. Louis at the start of the 2006 season, a couple club employees -- armed with meter sticks, measuring tape, a calculator and their own ingenuity -- went around the ballpark to construct a way to best estimate the distance of home runs. They came up with a grid that offered about three different values for each section of the ballpark. Right down to the row, they could then identify the distance traveled and judging by the way the ball arrived (liner, sky-high shot, normal parabola) they could offer a reasonable estimate.

Best Batting Performances By A Cardinal Rookie

Everyone is atwitter (pun mostly intended) about David Freese’s performance Thursday afternoon. But the stat that most people are quoting is the Cardinal rookie third baseman’s six runs batted in; some even are noting that it’s the most RBIs for a rookie since 1925*. That’s admirable as far as it goes, but many people now realize that RBIs are largely a dependent on game circumstance and teammates. In other words, RBIs contain some noise.

Cardinals Leaders Of The 1950's

After the 1940's the Cardinals had nowhere to go but down. But, their down wasn;t all that bad considering for the decade of the 1950's they played above .500 ball and were in 4th place in the NL standings for the decade. Their record for the 1950's was 776-763 .504. The best team was the 1957 edition which finished 87-67 .565 -8 2nd place. The worst team was the 1955 team that was 68-86 .442 -30.5 7th place.
