Jim Leyland Got Fire To Manage Back During His Scouting Tenure With Cardinals

Jim Leyland, having spent 11 years managing the Pittsburgh Pirates and two managing the Florida Marlins, winning a World Series in the process, quit after just one season guiding the Colorado Rockies in 1999. The Rockies were 72-90 and finished last in the National League Western Division and Leyland had had enough — of managing the Rockies and managing, in general.

College baseball has produced a galaxy of stars. The greatest hitter and pitcher of the last 50 years, Barry Bonds (Arizona State) and Roger Clemens (Texas), turned in memorable College World Series performances before entering pro ball. Last year's major award winners include Old Dominion's Justin Verlander (American League Cy Young), Stetson's Jacob deGrom (National League Cy Young) and Florida's Pete Alonso (NL Rookie of the Year).

Jason Isringhausen To Represent Cardinals At Draft

Eighteen former Major League All-Stars — including three Hall of Famers, two Most Valuable Players, two batting champions and two Cy Young Award winners — are among the baseball luminaries scheduled to represent the 30 clubs at Major League Baseball’s 2019 Draft, it was announced Thursday. Amateur players who will attend the 2019 Draft will be forthcoming.

Ahhh yes, thanks to those world beating AAA Iowa Cubs, it’s elimination day here in the STL. It comes earlier and earlier every year it seems. Must be climate change, or lack-of-big-bat syndrome. Perchance it is a mystery for the historians of the future to decide and prescribe upon this 2017 baseball season. But, alas, with elimination day comes so many reflections, memories, and thank yous.
