Memphis Redbirds Preview 7-22-09
Mother Nature was in a rude mood Tuesday night in downtown Memphis, bringing a long downpour of rain that never let the scheduled game between Memphis and Nashville begin. As a result, AutoZone Park will host a doubleheader Wednesday.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 10-8-08: Playoffs, Players Moves, MLB Mailbag Info
Darren Oliver(Angels):
"You're not going to know who's coming back," Hunter said, referring to potential free agents K-Rod, Anderson, Teixeira, Jon Garland, Juan Rivera and Darren Oliver. "You can't say you're going to be in the postseason again and have a team like this.
Heartbreaker Ends Angels' Season
Daric Barton(Athletics):
Daric Barton, despite his ugly rookie season, probably is a lock to start the season at first base as long as he's healthy. Carter likely will start the 2009 season at Double-A Midland or Triple-A Sacramento, and if he continues to crush and Barton continues to struggle, you might see Carter by midseason.
Mailbag: How Soon Will Carter Arrive?
Jeff Suppan(Brewers):
Postseason veteran Jeff Suppan (0-1) struggled through all three innings he pitched, surrendering three of the Phillies' four home runs and leaving the Brewers in a 5-0 hole before they batted in the bottom of the third.
Crew's Run Comes To An End In Game 4
Gerald Perry(Cubs):
Did he feel comfortable with Cubs hitting coach Gerald Perry?
"I felt pretty comfortable with Gerald," Fukudome said. "His instructions were very simple and direct and to the point. I didn't have any trouble understanding him at all."
Fukudome Knows He Has Work Ahead
Scott Radinsky(Indians):
Triple-A pitching coach Scott Radinsky is considered to be one of the names in the running for the bullpen coach job.
Mailbag: What Will It Take To Fix Tribe?
Matt Ginter(Indians):
Granted free agency.
Edgar Gonzalez(Padres):
Are the Padres going to keep Edgar Gonzalez?-- Christina D., San Diego
Mailbag: What About Kouzmanoff?
Brian Falkenborg(Padres):
Granted free agency.
Jaime Moyer(Phillies):
Throughout most of Sunday's champagne celebration at Miller Park, Phillies starter Jamie Moyer stood off to one corner, chatting quietly with a small group of bystanders. He was happy -- delighted even -- but subdued. And his eyes regularly wandered toward the younger players, most of them dousing each other with beer and champagne.
Moyer Offers Perspectives To First-Timers
Jack Wilson(Pirates):
Having just read the final mailbag of the season, I'm left with a question. If the Bucs figure to offer Adam LaRoche between $7-8 million, how can they not keep Jack Wilson at $7.25 million? We can surely find a player in the Minors that can replace LaRoche. -- Frank P., Hendersonville, Pa.
If the Pirates trade Wilson, do they think Brian Bixler will be as good or better? With Bixler's numbers, I don't think so. Your thoughts? -- Bill W., Franklin, N.C.
Mailbag: Final Thoughts On Alvarez Deal
Troy Percival(Rays):
“With Percy, we’ve gotten good reports from his two outings in the Instructional League and I think he’s healthy enough right now where it’s going to be part of our conversations in setting the roster.
Rays Mulling ALCS Roster
Jolbert Cabrera(Reds):
Outrighted to Triple-A Lousiville.
J.D. Drew(RedSox):
I guess obviously just kinda go through that last at bat.
Postgame Interview
Jaime Quirk, Rene Lacheman, & Clint Hurdle(Rockies):
Looking for a different way to attack the problems that led to a 74-88 finish in 2008, a year after they went to the World Series, the Rockies announced sweeping changes to their coaching staff on Tuesday
Rox Make Changes To Coaching Staff
Juan Richardson(Royals):
Re-signed to a minor league deal.

Matt Clement(Free Agent):
The Astros are also having discussions about right-hander Matt Clement, who was recently released by the Cardinals.
Astros Tidbits
Brian Falkenborg(Dodgers):
If possessing a World Series ring can be considered a measure of success, then Dodgers reliever Brian Falkenborg has one over the majority of his current teammates.
Falkenborg Knows What Can Happen: 83 Win Team Got Him A Ring
Joe Torre(Dogers):
Before Joe Torre, 68, managed the Los Angeles Dodgers, he guided the New York Yankees to four World Series championships in five years. Previous to directing the Bronx Bombers, he piloted the Atlanta Braves, New York Mets and, of course, the St. Louis Cardinals.
Dodgers Manager Embraces Cardinals Roots
Anthony Reyes & Matt Ginter(Indians):
One guy is finding his form, another has found his health, and both are coming back to the big leagues to help the Indians find their way in a lost season.
New Faces Join Tribe For Jays Series
Fernando Tatis(Mets):
Has Fernandomania returned to the Major Leagues? Castromania has a nice ring to it.
Unheralded Names Shine For Mets
Mark Grudzielanek(Royals):
Royals second baseman Mark Grudzielanek might be through for the season.
Grudzielanek May Be Finished For Year
Sidney Ponson(Yankees):
Lest the rest of the season speed on by them, the Yankees have no choice but to look ahead. There's no use in looking back at Joba Chamberlain, a pitcher who might not return to the team this season. No use in looking back at Chien-Ming Wang or Phil Hughes or Jorge Posada. Call it bad luck; call it baseball. The Yankees call it an excuse.

Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston knows that it's going to be his responsibility to dictate when Scott Rolen needs to take a day off to rest his ailing left shoulder. Rolen will never ask to be removed from the starting lineup.
Gaston Sits Rolen For Second Straight Game
Dan Haren(Diamondbacks):
Dan Haren has had his fair share of starts where he easily pitched well enough to win, but the D-backs' offense provided him with virtually no run support.
D-Backs Pound Bucs With 18 Hits
Anthony Reyes & Matt Ginter(Indians):
With all due respect to Matt Ginter, he's never been viewed as a major piece of the Indians' future rotation plans.
Reyes Could Get Rotation Call Soon
J.D. Drew(RedSox):
With third baseman Mike Lowell taking a scheduled night off on Monday because of the anti-inflammatory shot he took for his ailing right hip, the Red Sox had a different look to their lineup.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-3-08: Ginter Heading Back To Minors, Reyes Could Get Call, Walrond Returns To Majors, Lincoln Scoreless Streak Ends
Anthony Reyes & Matt Ginter(Indians):
The Indians yesterday moved another day closer to the end (sniff-sniff) of the Matt Ginter Era.
Ginter's Time Could Be Ending
Anthony Reyes came to the Cleveland Indians organization looking for a fresh start.
Bison's Reyes Showing Right Stuff
Edgar Gonzalez(Padres):
It's been years now since Adrian and Edgar Gonzalez played Wiffle ball, a game that was a staple of their childhood and, they say, a game that helped them reach a stage larger than the family backyard.
A Dream Fullfilled For Gonzalez Brothers
Les Walrond(Phillies):
When he signed to pitch for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, after his release from the Cubs organization, Les Walrond used the words of Phillies Minor League director Steve Noworyta as motivation.
Walrond Works Back To The Majors
Jaime Moyer(Phillies):
When Phillies manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee set up their post-All-Star break rotation, beginning with Jamie Moyer was an obvious choice, given his 9-0 record against Florida.
Moyer Seeks More Magic Vs. Marlins
Jack Wilson(Pirates):
Pirates general manager Neal Huntington did not sleep well Thursday night.
Moves Excite Pirates' GM Huntington
Mike Lincoln(Reds):
Reds reliever Mike Lincoln didn't know the length of his scoreless innings streak. He had no idea, in fact, before someone told him.
Lincoln's Streak Comes To A Glaring End

Ex-Cardinals Watch 8-2-08: Nunez Called Back Up, Ginter Looking To Rebound, Anderson & Grudzielanek Hurt Again
Vladimir Nunez(Braves):
The struggles Ring has experienced over the past two weeks forced the Braves to designate him for assignment on Saturday afternoon. He was replaced in the bullpen by right-handed reliever Vladimir Nunez, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Richmond.
Braves Designate Ring For An Assignment
Matt Ginter(Indians):
Matt Ginter hopes that Sunday's numbers against the Twins will offer a better reflection than his last start of how he's pitched since joining the Indians three weeks ago.
Ginter Hopes To Avoid The Big Inning
Marlon Anderson(Mets):
Daniel Murphy had just completed his first Triple-A game and was settling down for a Friday night meal when he received a message that his services were no longer needed in New Orleans. One game was enough. Time for the big leagues.
Murphy Called Up, Anderson To D.L.
Mark Grudzielanek(Royals):
The Royals placed injured second baseman Mark Grudzielanek on the disabled list and recalled infielder Jason Smith from Triple-A Omaha on Saturday.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 7-28-08: Barton's Return Delayed, Haren Extension, Ginter Another Start, Tatis Starting LF, Wells Back To Pen, Renteria Hitting
Josh Pressley(Somerset/Atlantic League):
Bangor native Josh Pressley is still in the swing of things as a first baseman for the Somerset (Mass.) Patriots.
Pressley Swings AHot Bat For Somerset Pats
Daric Barton(Athletics):
Rookie first baseman Daric Barton is 5-for-20 at Sacramento and continues to have some neck stiffness, according to A's manager Bob Geren.
Barton is eligible to come off the DL today but he is likely to remain with the River Cats for several more days and rejoin the A's at some point on their trip. Barton went 1-for-3 with a walk in the River Cats' 9-3 loss at Round Rock (Texas) on Monday.
Barton's Return Delayed
Dan Haren(Diamondbacks):
Indications are that the D-backs are close to agreeing to a contract extension with starter Dan Haren.
Haren Close To Contract Extension
Matt Ginter(Indians):
Matt Ginter wasn't necessarily shocked when he was called into manager Eric Wedge's office shortly after Friday night's game.
Ginter Looking To Stay Consistent
Fernando Tatis(Mets):
Jerry Manuel has anointed Fernando Tatis his full-time left fielder, barring the acquisition of a corner outfielder before Thursday's 4 p.m. trading deadline. That means Endy Chavez goes to fourth outfielder and late-game replacement when Ryan Church returns from the disabled list as soon as next Tuesday's home-stand opener against the Padres.
Jerry Manuel Gives Fernando Tatis Starting Nod In LF
Kip Wells(Rockies):
Rockies right-hander Kip Wells is no longer hoping for a chance in the starting rotation. The bullpen is his best, and possibly last, chance.
Wells Searching For Home In Pen
Edgar Renteria(Tigers):
Edgar Renteria spent much of this season trying to find his stroke at the plate. In the end, his biggest help might well have been to get away from the plate.

Recent Trade Breakdown
Shapiro made one other shrewd move Saturday, adding Anthony Reyes from the Cardinals for a Double-A arm. Reyes never fit in in St. Louis, so it’s hard to tease out how much of his failure to develop was situation versus being about him. In Cleveland, he should have the opportunity to the above-average starter he looked set to become three years ago, although the Indians will use him at Triple-A at first. The chance to take one last, long lingering glance at Matt Ginter is a bit too tempting to pass up.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 7-21-08:Nunez DFA'd, Suppan Return, Ginter Last Start, Anderson Challenges Teammates, Wells Lit Up, Ponson Decent Outing
Vladimir Nunez(Braves):
Braves manager Bobby Cox was pleased to have the opportunity to finally activate Rafael Soriano from the disabled list on Monday afternoon. Now he's just hoping to have the opportunity to see the right-handed reliever stay healthy for an extended period.
Soriano Returns From Disabled List
Jeff Suppan(Brewers):
All indications are that Jeff Suppan will start for the Brewers on Tuesday and pitch against his former team.
Suppan Returning Against Cardinals
Matt Ginter(Indians):
Of the many surprises involving the Indians in 2008, the biggest might be that Matt Ginter made a start for this club -- and before the All-Star break, no less.
Ginter Ready For What Could Be Last Start
Marlon Anderson(Mets):
One hundred games and -- it seemed -- little hope remained in their season when the Mets gathered in the clubhouse kitchen at Shea Stadium six weeks ago.
Anderson's Prophecy Ringing True
Kip Wells(Rockies):
With a spot open in the Rockies starting rotation, manager Clint Hurdle made it clear that Monday night was Kip Wells' tryout for a permanent role.
Rockies Out Of It Early In Wells' Return
Sidney Ponson(Yankees):
The Yankees are shorthanded, but not shortsighted. They know precisely what they need to do to eclipse the Red Sox and Rays in the American League East -- win, win and win some more -- and they also know that injuries won't make that task any easier.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 7-13-08: Suppan, Reyes, & Percival Rehabbing; Ginter Feeling Alright After 1st MLB Start; Moyer Tapped To Open 2nd Half
Jeff Suppan(Brewers):
Yost said he was at mile marker 19 of a 25-mile road in terms of making a decision, although the way he talked about the idea Sunday made it seem he was further down that path. The plan would be implemented after the all-star break, when Jeff Suppan comes off the disabled list. McClung would get the first turn next Monday in St. Louis.
Notes
Matt Ginter(Indians):
The Indians starting pitcher Saturday, Matt Ginter, had felt the pain before, so he knew it was no big deal.
Tribe's Ginter Fine After Early Exit
Jaime Moyer(Phillies):
To open the second half, Jamie Moyer, Kyle Kendrick and Cole Hamels are scheduled to take the hill for the Phillies in a crucial weekend series against the Marlins.
Moyer, Phils Open Key Series Vs. Marlins
Al Reyes & Troy Percival(Rays):
With RHP Al Reyes expected to be activated off the DL when play resumes and SS Jason Bartlett likely no more than a few days later, the Rays optioned SS Reid Brignac back to Triple-A Durham. He was 0-for-10 in four games.
Maddon said there was "a good chance" Reyes, out since June 10 with shoulder tendinitis, will be ready Friday. Bartlett (right knee sprain), whose absence has been glaring, might take a few more days but the Rays expect him to return during the six-game homestand.
RHP Troy Percival (left hamstring strain) will throw a bullpen session while home in California and hopes to throw a simulated game during Thursday's workout, but it's not certain how soon after he will be ready.
Brignac Going, Others Coming

Pinch-hit specialist Mark Sweeney, on the DL since July 4 with a strained right hamstring, will have one more minor-league rehab game and is expected to return to the roster Friday for the start of the second half.
Injury Updates
Matt Ginter(Indians):
To accommodate Matt Ginter's callup to start Saturday's game against the Rays, the Indians optioned reliever Brian Slocum to Triple-A Buffalo.
Slocum Loses Tribe Spot To Ginter
Ryan Garko brushed off the significance of it all. It was, after all, just one out of 162 games.
Garko, Ginter Star As Tribe Takes Series
Jeff Weaver(Indians):
The Buffalo Bisons have activated RHP Jeff Weaver. To make room on the Bisons roster, INF Chris De La Cruz has been transferred to Double-A Akron. De La Cruz hit .140 (6-43) with 4RBI in 18 games with the Bisons.
Weaver Activated By Buffalo Bisons
Fernando Tatis & Marlon Anderson(Mets):
When baseball's coffee break ends -- actually, before it ends for most teams -- the Mets will be back to work with a cast that is difficult to predict, down to the 25th place on the roster.
Roster Questiuons Up In Air For Mets
Dmitri Young(Nationals):
Injuries have made poor bedfellows with the Nationals for much of this season, but their latest setback, Dmitri Young's sore back, isn't expected to be too serious.
Sore Back Sidelines Young
Troy Percival(Rays):
Rays closer Troy Percival threw off a mound Saturday for the first time since going on the disabled list July 2 with a left hamstring strain
Simulated Game Next Step For Percival
Mike Lincoln(Reds):
As much as Reds reliever Mike Lincoln tried to downplay it, his victory in Friday's game vs. the Brewers had significance.
Lincoln's Win A Long Time Coming
