Failure To Extend Max Scherzer Suggests End Of Tigers' Blank-Check Approach

On Jan. 26, 2012, the largesse of Detroit Tigers owner Mike Ilitch seemed limitless. So did the potential of his franchise to win the World Series. That was the day the team announced it had signed Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million contract.

Jim Leyland Reiterates Displeasure With Callup Practice

On the day the Tigers and Red Sox finalized their September callups, manager Jim Leyland was asked how the expanded roster affects his bullpen matchups. Brendan Ryan On The Upswing At The Plate

Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan won't ever be known for his bat, but the defensive standout hit .345 over his past 16 games entering Saturday against the Twins to lift his batting average from .122 to .214. In Saturday's 5-4 walk-off loss, Ryan went 1-for-4, and is now hitting .215.

Brendan Ryan Finding Groove At The Plate

It's been so long since Brendan Ryan was in a groove at the plate that he's not going to overanalyze what's been happening the past week, as he put together a five-game hitting streak and laced his first two extra-base hits of the year with a home run and double the first two games against the Indians.

Tyrell Jenkins Named Midwest League Pitcher Of The Week For April 29-May 5

Midwest League
Tyrell Jenkins, Peoria
(1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 1 CG, 1 SHO, 9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 1 BB, 5 K)
Cardinals No. 7 prospect Tyrell Jenkins had neither reached the sixth inning nor allowed fewer than three runs in any of his first four starts. Indeed, the right-hander had never pitched past the sixth inning in his four years as a pro. That changed drastically on Sunday afternoon as the 20-year-old Texan went the distance in a nine-inning three-hit shutout of visiting Fort Wayne. Jenkins fanned five, walked one and at one point set down 16 TinCaps in a row. Though the gem was Jenkins' first win of the season, he felt it was only a precursor of what's to come, telling MiLB.com, "This is just a starting point and I'll try to throw a no-hitter next time out on Friday."

Chris Carpenter Doesn't Fault His Quick Return

Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter does not believe the arm problems that could cost him this season are the result of a rapid return to the mound from surgery last fall, a recovery that the surgeon who performed the procedure suggested this week may have been trying “to do too much too soon.”

Tony LaRussa, Cardinals Ready For Challenge

If I didn’t know better, I’d almost think that Tony La Russa was loving this.

He’s not, of course. He would much rather get 30 starts from right-hander Adam Wainwright than none. He aches for Wainwright, personally and professionally, aches for his team.

Projecting Adam Wainwirght's Potential Replacement

As unfortunate as the Adam Wainwright injury is for the Cardinals, they can hardly afford to wallow in shame. With all the rest of the talent on hand in St. Louis, the Cardinals are still within striking distance of the NL Central title as well as the Wild Card. How close they can come to a playoff appearance without one of the best pitchers in the game will largely depend on his replacement. The Cardinals look to have a few options.
