Bob Sykes Was The Cardinals' Latter Day Ernie Broglio

Only twice since Bob Gibson did it in 1968 has a Cardinals hurler pitched an extra-inning, complete-game shutout at Busch Stadium. One involved Mark Mulder beating Houston 1-0 in 10 innings in 2005. The other came on the Fourth of July 40 years ago.

Ernie Broglio Dies At 83

Former Cardinals pitcher Ernie Broglio, who was the other half of the trade that brought Hall of Famer Lou Brock to St. Louis, died Tuesday night after battling cancer, according to social media posts from his family. Broglio was 83.

Curve-balling righthander Ernie Broglio tied for the National League lead in victories in 1960 with Milwaukee’s Warren Spahn when he won 21 for the Cardinals in his second big-league season. Broglio also won 18 for the 1963 Cardinals team which challenged for, but fell short of, the National League pennant.
