Sean Doolittle On Closing: 'You Can't Simulate It'

Even when things go wrong, even when he walks off the mound as the opposing team forms a celebratory dogpile, a closer provides value to a team. A traditional closer who can handle the falls from the tightrope and bounce back the next day as if nothing happened brings stability to a bullpen, and keeps the highest heat off his fellow relievers.

Can Larry Walker Make The Jump To 2020 Enshrinement?

It has been well established that former Rockies, Expos and (for a brief time) Cardinals outfielder Larry Walker deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Yet he received just 54.6 percent of the BBWAA vote when the results were announced on Tuesday. And while he did make some significant gains this cycle, Walker heads into his final year of Hall of Fame ballot eligibility 20.4 percentage points shy of election.

Lee Smith Earns Election To Hall Of Fame

Lee Smith was perhaps the most feared reliever of his generation and helped define the closer's role in the modern game during 18 seasons in the Majors. Harold Baines was far different, stoic and shy, a craftsman who produced 2,866 hits with one of the sweetest swings of his day.

He led the league in saves with five different teams, retired as the all-time leader in saves, and then Lee Smith watched the role he helped define change, shorten, and his support for the Hall of Fame change, shrink.

As it was with his signature slow, deliberate walk to the mound, it took Lee Smith a little longer than expected to get to Cooperstown, but it was always clear he belonged.

Since he retired in 1997, the stats for Lee Smith have not changed but today the vote finally did as the former St. Louis Cardinals reliever was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Lee Smith Hopes Long Wait For For Hall Of Fame Will End

Lee Smith was the major league career saves leader for 13 years from 1993-2006. Surely, he thought, this would merit strong Hall of Fame consideration. But he never received more than 51 percent of the vote in any of the 15 elections for which was eligible in voting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, a period that ended last year.

Red Sox Asked Marlins About Kyle Barraclough; Scott Boras Blames Mike Matheny For Greg Holland's Bad Season

Kyle Barraclough, RHP, Marlins — The Red Sox did make an inquiry on him at the trade deadline, but wisely backed off. He’s allowed 11 earned runs in his last 4⅓ innings and has blown three of his last four save chances, including a ninth-inning meltdown on Thursday. Barraclough has been throwing an inordinate amount of breaking balls, which is giving rise to speculation about fatigue or an injury.
