He said one player is “just short of the size of a Walmart.” Another is “phenomenal” at making adjustments. And he talked about how one particular Cardinals’ big-leaguer has stood out with improvement.

Same Expectations, Same Faces As Cardinals Fully Open Spring Training

With the Cardinals’ possible opening-day lineup in the field Tuesday morning for the first fly-ball drill of the first full-squad workout of spring, coach Stubby Clapp slipped a ball into the pitching machine and —fwoop! — sent it high and carrying toward the outfield. As they will be throughout the Cardinals’ search for more offense and a cleanup hitter, all eyes turned to left field.

Cardinals' Infiuelders Come Early To Learn From Jose Oquendo

The official start of Cardinals’ spring training camp for pitchers and catchers isn’t until Wednesday. But in a small area adjacent to the batting cages outside the clubhouse, Jose Oquendo is holding court. Most of his defensive instruction involves infielders, but pitchers and even catchers who like to play shortstop — such at Yadier Molina — also are welcome.

Shifts In Approach Aid Historic Turnaround For Sure-Handed Cardinals

In the eighth inning Wednesday, as the Cardinals tried to cobble together innings from the bullpen, manager Mike Shildt met his infielders on the mound for his sixth and final pitching change of the game. The switch, from lefty Andrew Miller to righthander Giovanny Gallegos, meant different alignments for the infield, a shift to their shifts, and while Shildt came out to take the ball from the pitcher he also had something to give the fielders.

Cardinals Thrive On Steals - And Not Allowing Them; Daniel Ponce De Leon Dazzles; Michael Wacha Will Face Brewers; No Shot For Jose Martinez

When a team is 12th in the league in home runs and 13th in slugging percentage, it behooves that team to play the game a little differently offensively. The Cardinals, while not exactly the second coming of the “Whiteyball” Cardinals, who used to steal 300 bases in a season some nearly 35 years ago, have profited from a more aggressive, yet sound, approach to base stealing.

Shooting Stars

Jake Woodford is rising. The 22-year-old Memphis Redbirds pitcher will pull off a rare trifecta when he takes the mound for the Pacific Coast League in Wednesday's Triple-A All-Star Game in El Paso. It will be Woodford's third All-Star Game in four seasons, across all three primary levels of minor-league baseball. Woodford first earned All-Star recognition with the Class-A Peoria Chiefs (Midwest League) in 2016. He represented Double-A Springfield in last year's Texas League All-Star Game.

Ben Johnson's Memphis

When the Memphis Redbirds open their 22nd season Thursday night at AutoZone Park, they'll do so with their eighth manager. But 37-year-old Ben Johnson will be the first native Memphian to deliver the Opening Day lineup card to the home plate umpire. So it's a homecoming of sorts for the former Germantown High School centerfielder, but with a recent standard almost impossible to match, particularly for a man in charge of his first Triple-A club.
