Budget Aside, Joe Girardi's Efforts In 2009 Priceless
The link between high payrolls and managerial credit is a tenuous one. Regardless of what Joe Girardi did this season, his efforts will always be measured against the backdrop of a budget exceeding $200 million.

Where Does Production Come From?
There are a lot of ways to build a winning ballclub. The method behind the Angels' success doesn't get the same attention as some other techniques, but perhaps it should. They've won 89 or more games six consecutive seasons, including 97 and 100 the last two.

J.D. Drew Launches Home Run But Angels Sweep Red Sox; Darren Oliver Earns Win
David Ortiz singled with two outs in the eighth, and pinch-runner Joey Gathright stole second before Lowell drove his run-scoring single past first base. Darren Oliver got the final out of the eighth, and that made him the winning pitcher when the Angels rallied improbably.

D. Drew made the most of his opportunity to start on Sunday in Game 3 of the American League Division Series when he hit a fourth-inning home run that gave the Red Sox a 5-1 lead over the Angels. If Rocco Baldelli's left hip injury had healed in time for him to make Boston's playoff roster, Drew likely would have started the game on the bench with the Angels throwing left-hander Scott Kazmir. Drew, a .262 career hitter against lefties, hit .272 against southpaws this season, compared to Baldelli's .290 average.

Pedro Martinez In No Rush; J.D. Drew One Of Four Players Making Over $10 Million On Red Sox
Pedro Martinez continues to work out and wait for the right offer from the right team so he can resume his career. The former Red Sox ace is waiting for teams to realize that he would be a better gamble than some of the low-cost wagers that have not panned out early on.
“He’s working out, he feels great; he’s not in any hurry to make a decision,” said his agent, Fernando Cuza. “He’s waiting for the perfect opportunity and he’s glad he didn’t make a couple of early decisions that he could have made.”
It is believed that Martinez is seeking a one-year deal with a base salary around $5 million, although Cuza refused to talk pricetag. . . .
Through Thursday, the Red Sox were hitting .125 with two RBI in eight bases-loaded situations. That was ranked 25th in the majors.

Cardinals Have Busy Early Schedule; Khalil Greene Bats 2nd; Jason Motte Will Be Fine; Tony LaRussa Would Help, More On Deryk Hooker
If the weather holds in the Midwest and East over the first five weeks of the season, the Cardinals are scheduled to play more games than any other team in the National League — and two more games than each of their divisional competitors — in that span.
