J.D. Drew Launches Home Run But Angels Sweep Red Sox; Darren Oliver Earns Win

David Ortiz singled with two outs in the eighth, and pinch-runner Joey Gathright stole second before Lowell drove his run-scoring single past first base. Darren Oliver got the final out of the eighth, and that made him the winning pitcher when the Angels rallied improbably.

D. Drew made the most of his opportunity to start on Sunday in Game 3 of the American League Division Series when he hit a fourth-inning home run that gave the Red Sox a 5-1 lead over the Angels. If Rocco Baldelli's left hip injury had healed in time for him to make Boston's playoff roster, Drew likely would have started the game on the bench with the Angels throwing left-hander Scott Kazmir. Drew, a .262 career hitter against lefties, hit .272 against southpaws this season, compared to Baldelli's .290 average.
