Cardinals Move Another Catcher From VSL To DSL, Release 1B/OF

The St. Louis Cardinals have assigned catcher Yorbel Alcala to their rookie-level club in the Dominican Republic.

Alcala, 19, was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Cardinals on July 17, 2006 out of Venezuela. The switch-hitter played in 47 games batting .146 with one double, two triples, eight RBIs, and scored 13 runs for the VSL Cardinals in 2007. The following year he spent his second season in the organization in Venezuela playing in 49 games. The right-handed throwing catcher improved quite a bit at the plate batting .244 with five doubles, one triple, one home run, nine RBIs, and scored eight runs for the team. Alcala also played 12 games at first base with the amount of catchers the VSL club carried last season.

Alcala was in Jupiter, FL during extended spring training trying to crack one of the three short-season affiliates and becomes the second catcher (Jesus Montero) to receive the move from VSL to DSL in 2009. The DSL Cardinals have been missing a big piece to their puzzle behind and at the plate since Audris Perez was promoted last season to GCL.

In another move, the Cardinals released first baseman/outfielder Marcos Martinez from their Dominican Summer League team.

Martinez, 20, was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Cardinals in 2006/07 out of the Dominican Republic. He batted .150 with seven doubles, four home runs, 14 RBIs, and scored 19 runs in his three-year tenure with the organization.

The right-handed hitter only played in one game this season, on June 1, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
