Adam Kennedy - Top 100 Angels #19

Adam Kennedy was a top prospect traded by the St. Louis Cardinals along with pitcher Kent Bottenfield to the Angels for outfielder Jim Edmonds. At the time Edmonds was one of a surplus of outfielders that the Angels had. Darin Erstad, Garret Anderson and Tim Salmon were all under club control longer than Edmonds would be. Meanwhile, it had been a long time - fourteen years, since the Angels had had a long-term solution at second base.

Cardinals Select Second Baseman Kolten Wong At #22

The Cardinals got a baseball rat with their first-round Draft pick on Monday, a kid who loves to play ball. They got a young man who, according to his college coach, "plays above his tools."
It had been 25 years since the Cardinals had chosen a second baseman in the first round of the first-year player draft. That choice was 5-foot-9 Florida State infielder Luis Alicea, who played 13 seasons in the major leagues, six of them with the Cardinals and, in his second tour with the club, was manager Tony La Russa's opening day second baseman in La Russa's first game as manager of the Cardinals in 1996.

With the 22nd-overall pick, the Cardinals went with Hawaii second baseman Kolten Wong. Wong will be a spark plug at the top of the lineup that one scout said is the best pure hitter in the draft outside of Anthony Rendon.

The St. Louis Cardinals selected a college second baseman with the 22nd overall selection of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.

The Cardinals do not exactly make it a secret that one of the factors they use in evaluating top candidates in the annual baseball draft is how that player performed in the Cape Cod summer league.
The Cardinals shouldn't have much trouble convincing Hawaii second baseman Kolten Wong to skip his senior season and begin his professional career.
