In the first month of the season, Brian Sanchez lead the way offensively for the Dominican Summer League Cardinals. Sanchez racked up the extra bases hits with doubles, triples, and home runs and drove in a handful more runs than anyone else on the club. Elehuris Montero was not far behind in those categories. Carlos Rodriguez also had a strong showing and lead the team in hits and batting average. Edwin Figuera was the man on the bases swiping seven of ten successfully. Wadye Ynfante got off to a late start and was not far behind. Sanel Rosendo, Luis Flores, Dariel Gomez, and Starlin Balbuena all struggled at the plate.

Ynfante made up for lost time in the second month and
exploded at the plate, leading the club in hits and RBIs and was right up there
in doubles and home runs. Rosendo turned
things around and had a Sanchez-like month, in July, collecting extra base
hits. Rodriguez stayed on course like he
did in the first month, but didn’t play after the All-Star game. Sanchez saw his strikeouts shoot through the
roof and average drop off, but still put up the numbers when he got a hold of
the ball. Montero plummeted
dramatically at the plate. Andres Luna
jumped right in the mix for the team after a slow first month and Balbuena
improved his numbers.

Balbuena finally got comfortable at the plate in the final
month of the season and picked up where others left off earlier in the
season. Gomez stepped up in place of the
absence of Rodriguez, to rack up doubles, triples, RBIs, and walks. Ynfante still contributed, but slowed at the
end of the year. Rosendo returned to
where he was in the beginning and Sanchez stayed on the mid-season slump. Montero’s engine started to spark after a
summer-long slow.

The final stats for the five main hitters on the DSL
Cardinals all show they contributed in one way or another during the
season. Sanchez and Rosendo were the main
extra base hitters and power but racked up the strikeouts. Montero and Balbuena, who didn’t lead in any
major category, were not far behind in many stats. All five at some point had a huge impact in
one individual month. I have chosen
Ynfante for the 2015 Dominican Summer League Cardinals Player of the Year for
his overall season where he lead in hits, total bases, AVG, OBP, SLG, and OPS,
despite a slow start, and was in the mix for all other team stats.
