The Dominican Summer League Cardinals opened the 2015 season
with a strong rotation that carried throughout the year. David
Oca (2014 DSL Pitcher of the Year), Franyel
Casadilla, Oneiver Diaz, Juan Alvarez (2014 DSL Reliever of the
Year), and a tandem of Ronald Medrano and Estarlin Arias. Oca started
up right where he left off from last year, just dominating from the hill. Diaz and Casadilla has previous success in
the past, but struggled a little early on.
Diaz lead all starters in walks and hit batters. Casadilla has the highest ERA among everyday
openers. Alvarez was sleeper keeping his walks down and striking
out a decent amount. After Oca and Arias
were promoted the club added Junior
Gonzalez to the rotation and Medrano received more innings.

In the second month of the season, the Cardinals saw
Casadilla, Alvarez, Diaz, and Medrano stepped up in the absence of Oca and
Arias. All had strong months in terms of
strikeouts, walks, and keeping the runners from scoring. Gonzalez turned things around from the
previous month but did not receive a solid backing from the fielding as we see
six runs went unearned. Will Changarotty was inserted in the rotation to fill the
void left by Medrano’s promotion to the Gulf Coast League.

In the final month, Casadilla established himself as the
leader of the starting rotation. Diaz
also stayed on course but Alvarez and Gonzalez didn’t get a good backing
defensively from their fielders.
Changarotty rounded out what ended up being one of the club’s best
months in 2015.

Diaz made the most starts out of the main four starters for
the season but took on the most hits, allowed earned runs, home runs, and
walks. Gonzalez gave up the most runs
and hit more batters than any others.
Casadilla made a great push this season for the Dominican Summer League
Cardinals, leading the starting rotation in innings pitched (and per start) and
strikeouts, but also kept the hits allowed, runs, earned runs, and walks to
minimum. Alvarez had a solid showing
this season and might of made a stronger case with a few more starts.
Congratulations to Franyel Casadilla, the 2015 Dominican
Summer League Cardinals Starting Pitcher of the Year.
