The bullpen was a weak link for the Dominican Summer League Cardinals.  In the first month of the season the club collected an overall ERA of 4.07 and turned only three of seven save opportunities.  Junior Gonzalez, Juan Alvarez, Ronald Medrano, and Estarlin Arias all were used in a tandem fashion and would later be moved into the rotation.  Will Changarotty had a solid first month striking out 13 and walking five over 13.2 innings.  Diego Cordero had a strong month in keeping the runs down.  Enrique Perez had a really good month but his walks allowed almost equalled his strike out count.  Unfortunely relievers Fabian Blanco, Cristhian Lugo, Luis Rosales, and Edwar Ramirez struggled hard to get going.

In the second month of the season, the club saw their ERA balloon to 5 and convert three of ten save opportunities.  Estailin Tejada took over as front man for the bullpen, leading in strikeouts and ERA (as a constant member).  Changarotty continued his solid run, but saw his strikeouts drop below his walks allowed.  Rosales turned things around compared to his first month, but still had out walked his strikeouts.  Blanco, Ramirez, and Lugo stayed on the same road from the beginning of the season while Perez and Cordero took a big hit.  Frendy Gavin missed a majority of the month with an injury.  We also see newly signed international free agents Anthony Trompiz, Noel DeJeus, and Brian Pirela make their debuts a few days after inking deals.

Changarotty made a complete move from the bullpen into the rotation.  Perez bounced back from a so-so month to lead the team in strikeouts and dropped his walks.  After struggling all season long, Ramirez, Blanco, and Lugo stabilized and had strong months.  Tejada and Rosales has small hiccups but still were valuable to the team.  Gavin returned late and was released while Angel Estevez returned from a season long injury.

As we look at how the relievers handled inherited runners, Tejada was probably one of the better pitchers.  Gavin, Cordero, DeJesus, Rosales, Changarotty, and Perez only took on a small amount with good results.  Lugo, Blanco, and Ramirez could not keep the runners on base.

Looking at the two top arms out of the bullpen, the award for 2015 Dominican Summer League Cardinals Reliever of the Year could go either way.  The one thing that sticks out is Perez logging ten plus more innings than Tejada.  Perez has some struggles at the beginning of the season when it came to strikeouts and walks ratio but turned it around in the end.  Tejada earned more saves but Perez picked up more holds in the middle innings.  Tejada also doubled Perez’s hit total and we can only wonder if with a few more innings would his runs, walks, and strikeout totals jump.  I have chosen Perez for his more prominent role in the bullpen with the club throughout season.

Congratulations to Enrique Perez on earning the 2015 Dominican Summer League Cardinals Reliever of the Year award.
