Ryan Ludwick Out With Sore Thumb, Jon Jay Starts; Brad Penny Begins Throwing Program; Felipe Lopez Lifted With Bruised Thumb; Aaron Miles Up; Etc...

Ryan Ludwick was held out of the Cardinals' lineup on Tuesday night after suffering a left thumb injury on Monday. Jon Jay got the nod in his place in right field.

Cardinals pitcher Brad Penny (strained back muscle) threw for the first time since the injury this afternoon, general manager John Mozeliak revealed. Mozeliak said Penny threw from flat ground during a workout before the start of batting practice.

Cardinals hitting coach Mark McGwire’s wife Stephanie gave birth to three girls, manager Tony La Russa said. He received a text message announcing the births this afternoon. McGwire wrote that his triplets are “doing awesome” and that “Steph is great,” according to La Russa, who read the text message to the media during his pre-game chat.
