Will David Eckstein be slotted in the No. 2 hole in the lineup or would he be better suited at the end of the lineup so that we can have more speed at the top of the lineup?
-- Edward S., Imperial Beach, Calif.
I think Eckstein is perfectly suited for the No. 2 spot in the order because he's a guy who can get a runner over with a bunt or by hitting behind the runner. You want a guy in that spot who can really handle the bat. That's Eckstein. Speed is great and you ideally would like your leadoff hitter to possess that. Let's say your leadoff hitter gets on base, then you can bunt him over, maybe hit-and-run and let Eckstein punch a ball into right field. Then you've got first and third and no one out. Will this happen a lot? Who knows? But it is why Eckstein is best suited, on this team, to hit in that spot in the order.
