Rigo Beltran (Carolina Pitching Coach/Reds):
If Carolina pitching coach Rigo Beltran has his way, don't expect to see huge strikeout numbers from the Mudcats in 2009. Beltran, who played with the Cardinals, Mets, Rockies and Expos in his four-year Major League career, wants to see plenty of ground balls coming off of the bats of Southern League foes.
"One of the things that I'm teaching to them a lot is that we're going to become ground ball pitchers," Beltran said. "When you become a ground ball pitcher, you're going after the strike zone with every pitch. I don't want them nitpicking. I want them to attack the bottom of the strike zone with every pitch."
