Ex-Cardinals Watch 7-7-09: Kip Wells Released; Luke Gregerson & Scott Thomas Activated; Alberto Castillo & Randy Flores Optioned; David Eckstein On DL

Daric Barton (Athletics):
It almost seems as if Barton is washed up at this point. The former top prospect in the system flamed out last year when given the big-league job at first base, and then he followed that up with a miserable start at Triple-A when he was sent back down to the minors to begin the year. After spending much of June in back in the big leagues more out of necessity than anything else, Barton is now trying to hit his way back, going 7-for-21 with three home runs since his return to Sacramento. He's still a relatively young 23, and he still has some kind of a chance.
Baseball Prospectus

Chris Perez (Indians):
It was not the kind of first impression any pitcher would want to make.
Akron Beacon Journal

Adam Kennedy (Athletics):
The A's got him more, though. Mark Ellis hit a two-run double to center later in the inning, and Adam Kennedy made it 4-0 with an RBI single, one of his three hits on the night.

Kip Wells (Free Agent):
Right-hander Kip Wells has cleared waivers and elected free agency.
All Nats All The Time

David Eckstein, Luke Gregerson, & Edgar Gonzalez (Padres):
Padres second baseman David Eckstein was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday as San Diego made a series of roster moves.
Padres Official Site

Jason Marquis (Rockies):
Not that Jason Marquis needed it as he recorded his best-in-baseball 11th win, but the game served as an exclamation point after his All-Star selection Sunday. The veteran right-hander tossed eight shutout innings, extending his scoreless streak to 17 frames. That stretch includes a complete-game victory over the Dodgers.

Joe Girardi (Yankees MGR):
Derek Jeter's lengthy Major League career has featured many events on the playing field, but thus far, he has been able to avoid an ejection. Yet if he were tossed in the first inning on Monday, he might have been justified.
Yankees Official Site

Alberto Castillo (Orioles):
Was optioned back to Triple-A Norfolk at end of June.

Timothy Dorn (Angels):
Single-A Cedar Rapids placed him on the 7-day disabled list.

Scott Thomas (Dodgers):
Triple-A Albuquerque activated him from the 7-day disabled list.

Randy Flores (Rockies):
Was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Ex-Cardinals Watch 6-26-09: Chris Farley Signs Deal; Orber Moreno & Scott Vander Weg Released; Marlon Anderson May Rejoin Mets; Timothy Dorn Promoted

Terry Pendleton (Braves Coach):
Braves hitting coach Terry Pendleton was born in Los Angeles in 1960 and grew up with Michael's music -- and even joined Fawcett on a sitcom set. He said after Atlanta's game that, "you just think people like that are going to be around forever."

"They're the superstars," Pendleton said. "You don't ever think they're going to die. But it's a reminder for all of us that none of us are invincible. Each of us will have a day.

&

Ron Villone (Nationals):
"It's a shame when anybody passes away," Nationals reliever Ron Villone said. It's what people were talking about around baseball, besides baseball.
MLB

Braden Looper (Brewers):
Brewers pitcher Braden Looper had an appointment with the team doctor on Thursday, but reported nothing but soreness the day after he was struck on the back of his right arm by a line drive.
Brewers Official Site

Jason Isringhausen (Rays):
Wearing a backwards cap and T-shirt in the clubhouse before Thursday's game, Rays reliever Jason Isringhausen's attire didn't give the gloomy vibe one might expect from a pitcher just days removed from surgery that might end his career.
MLB

Timothy Dorn (Angels):
Was promoted from Rookie-Level Arizona League to Single-A Cedar Rapids.

Orber Moreno (Free Agent):
The Tigres de Quintana Roo of the Triple-A Mexican League released him. He made four relief appearances and allowing five hits, one earned run, two walks, and striking out three over 3.2 innings (2.45 ERA). Moreno pitched for Diablos Rojos del Mexico earlier in the season.

Scott Vander Weg (Free Agent):
The St. Paul Saints of the American Association released him.

Chris Farley (Worcester):
The Worcester Tornadoes of the Canadian American League signed him to a contract for the 2009 season.

Marlon Anderson (Newark):
Furthermore, Marlon Anderson is believed to have left the Bears with the hopes of returning to the Mets organization, and will apparently retire if he is unable to do so.

He played seven games this season with the Bears — all on the road — and hit .240 with an RBI, three walks and three strikeouts.
Atlantic League Baseball

Dan Haren (Diamondbacks):
Right-hander Dan Haren's velocity hasn't been as explosive this season, but his results haven't suffered, and for that Haren credits the development of his cut fastball, a pitch that he has been working to refine for two years.
Arizona Republic

Edgar Renteria (Giants):
The first is shortstop Edgar Renteria. Thirty-three and a mediocre defender with an unreal amount of wear on his treads, he has had one year in the last six in which he was something more than a decent hitter, and is thus exactly the sort one doesn't want to tie on to. So of course the San Francisco Giants, who have made a cult of this class of player, signed him for two years and $18.5 million, and have been rewarded by the sight of Renteria trying to keep his slugging average and OBP above .300.

Russell Branyan (Mariners):
Adrian Beltre and Russell Branyan feel better, as does Ken Griffey Jr. All are in tonight's lineup.
Seattle Times

Cesar Izturis (Orioles):
Cesar Izturis began his official rehabilitation on Tuesday, when he joined his teammates and participated in baseball drills for the first time since undergoing an appendectomy on June 5. Izturis is still out for at least a week, but he was able to jog a little bit and take 20-25 swings off a tee on Tuesday.
Orioles Official Site

Jeff Suppan (Brewers):
By all accounts, Brewers starting pitcher Jeff Suppan, who allowed seven runs, four earned, on nine hits, didn't pitch as poorly as his line showed.
Brewers Official Site

Max Scherzer (Diamondbacks):
Scherzer left the field exhausted and it's hard to blame him. He pitched six solid innings and struck out seven. He also threw a season-high 119-pitches.
Diamondbacks Official Site

Jamie Moyer (Phillies):
Moyer certainly did his job. He allowed just one run on five while allowing three walks and striking out four in six innings to pick up the 251st win of his career, which ties him for 43rd place on baseball's all-time list with Bob Gibson.
Phillies Official Site

Joe Nelson (Rays):
Rays pitcher Joe Nelson took exception to John Kruk's comments on ESPN on Monday regarding Donald Fehr, the executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, after the news of Fehr's pending retirement.
