Memphis Redbirds Report April 5-13, 2013

The Memphis Redbirds opened the 2012 season with a win and followed that with eight consecutive losses.  The Triple-A club is1-8 with a 1-7 record on the road and 0-1 count at home.  The team has a .111 PCT and are six games out of first in the Pacific Coast League American Northern Division.

April 5 Memphis Official Site Post Game: Brandon Dickson was awarded the task as 2012 opening day starter in a four-game series on the road vs. the Oklahoma City Redhawks.  Dickson pitched very well into the sixth inning, giving up a home run to Mike Hessmen, before Barret Browning came into shut it down.  The Redbirds put a run on the board in the third and fourth innings with homers byPete Kozma and Matt Adams.  Both clubs went scoreless in the fifth and sixth.  In the seventh, Cedric Hunter tripled in a run and later scored the go ahead for Memphis.  The Redbird bullpen kept everything in line until Eduardo Sanchezstruggled in the ninth and gave up a couple runs but Memphis pulled off the 4-3 win.

April 6 Oklahoma City Official Site Post Game: In game two, of the Memphis @ Oklahoma City series, OKC got things going and scored five runs in the first two frames off Redbird starter Brian Broderick.  Broderick was touched for eight hits and six runs (including a three-run homer in the first) before be knocked out in the fifth inning.  The Redhawks didn't ease up adding another six runs in the final five frames due to errors and bullpen control issues.  Matt Adams did highlight with a double and home run and Amaury Cazana added a double but Memphis fell to Oklahoma City 12-3.

April 7 Memphis Commercial Appeal Post Game: Oklahoma City held the Memphis Redbirds out of the game until the seventh inning, but began the game with three runs in the first.  Joe Kelly gave up an opening inning double and turned right around to pick Justin Ruggiano off at second.  A couple singles later and an error gave the Redhawks a early 3-0 lead.  Kelly came out in the third, making way forJess Todd who gave up only two runs in the fifth.  Both Kelly and Todd combined for ten strikeouts and two walks.  With the score 5-0, the Redbirds tried to make a late game rally that came up one run short which included a Steven Hill solo homer and Matt Adams pinch hit three-run homer.  Oklahoma City held off Memphis for the 5-4 win.

April 8 Memphis Commercial Appeal Post Game: Shelby Miller was sent to the hill in game four of the series against Oklahoma City.  The Redhawks jumped out in front early with four runs in the first three frames, which included a home run by former Memphis Redbird Brett Wallace.  Memphis did get base runners on board in the fourth but could only push one run across the plate to get to within three runs behind.  OKC shut down the Memphis offense for the rest of the game and went after their bullpen and Eduardo Sanchez in the eighth.  The Redhawks collected four hits, four runs, two walks, and one hit batter off Sanchez in a matter of two-thirds of an inning.  Oklahoma City won over Memphis 8-1.

April 9 Memphis Official Site Post Game: Memphis moved along and headed to New Orleans for a four-game series against the Zephyrs.  Former Memphis Redbird Donovan Solano got the scoring starter doubling a run in for New Orleans off of Nick Additon.  The Redbirds answered back and took the lead in the second with a two-run homer by Amuary Cazana and Cedric Hunter touched all four bases.  Scott Cousins tripled and Chris Aguila doubled in runs to tie up the game.  Each club's bullpens came in an pitched seven shut out innings, but the Redhawks broke through as Clint Sammons hit a game-winning two-run homer offAdam Reifer in the bottom of the 13th.  Oklahoma City beat Memphis 5-3.

April 10 Memphis Commercial Appeal Post Game: Brandon Dickson was up for his second go-around this week after starting opening day.  Dickson went a little longer into the game extending his pitch count to 25+ more and striking out six over six innings.  New Orleans got to Dickson in the second and third.  Jess Toddcame on and pitched two scoreless to finish the game but the story was the lack of Redbird offense which only included six singles.  New Orleans shut out Memphis 2-0.

April 11 Memphis Official Site Post Game: In the second game between Memphis and New Orleans, same results just a different day.  Brian Broderickturned things around in his second outing of the season only allowing two earned runs in five innings.  New Orleans starter Brad Hand was quite impressive also, as he struck out ten, walked four, three hits, and no runs over six innings.  The Zephyrs bullpen continued the success and kept the scoreboard clear of any Redbird runs for the 2-0 victory.  The Redbirds, again, was almost non-existent with five hits (one for extra bases on a Matt Adams' double) and five walks.

April 12 New Orleans Official Site Post Game: Memphis took to the scoreboard first thing in the finale of the four-game series against New Orleans.  Matt Adams drove in Adron Chambers on a single and Ryan Jackson scored on a Bryan Anderson fielding error hit to second.  Joe Kelly was pretty untouchable through the first frames only allowing one hit.  The Zephyrs did get through as Sergio Pedroza hit a two-run home run off Kelly in the fourth to tie the game up 2-2.  New Orleans shut down the Memphis offensive for the remainder of the game after the spark in the first inning.  Former Redbird Donovan Solanocame around and scored the go-ahead run for the Zephyrs in the eighth to knock off the Redbirds 3-2.

April 13 Memphis Official Site Post Game: Shelby Miller received the 2012 Memphis Redbirds' home opening day notch and was pinned against familiar foe, in the Oklahoma City Redhawks.  First time around OKC managed to knock Miller out early and this time he went just a little deeper into the contest.  Miller looked untouchable for the first three innings allowing one hit, inducing a double play and fly out, and striking out four.  The Redbirds held a 2-0 lead after they started the game off with a two-run shot by Ryan Jackson in the first.  Game switched in the Redhawks direction during the fourth inning as they put up one run in the fourth and three in the next two innings, each.  This gave Oklahoma City a 7-2 lead and they weren't done.  An error and a couple singles set Fernando Martinez up to hit a grand slam off Maikel Cleto in the eighth.  Jackson pushed across his second RBI of the game in the bottom half as Oklahoma City smashed Memphis 11-3.

Who's Hot:

Eugenio Velez earned himself a spot in the lineup and will look to continue a four-game hitting streak into the next week.  The 29-year old switch-hitter went 10-for-24 (.417) with one double, two walks, three stolen bases, one sacrifice, two strikeouts, and one caught stealing.  Velez played four games in right field, two at third base (committed one throwing error), and one as a pinch hitter.

Matt Adams ended this period with a four-game hitting streak but also had four multi-hit and two multi-RBI games during that time.  The 23-year old left-handed hitter went 14-for-35 (.400) with three doubles, three home runs, seven RBIs (six w/two-outs), two walks, one stolen base, five runs, eight strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  Adams played eight games at first base, where he assisted in four double plays and committed one throwing error, and one game as pinch hitter.

Ryan Jackson put together four multi-hit and  one multi-RBI game during the opening of the PCL season.  The 23-year old right-handed hitter went 11-for-36 (.306) with two doubles, one home run, four RBIs (one w/two-outs), four walks, three runs, 11 strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  Jackson played eight games at shortstop, where he assisted in two double plays, and one game at second base, where he assisted in another double play.

Brandon Dickson came through with two very good starts with one being the only Redbird win of the week. The 27-year right-hander got the call for 2012 opening day and tossed five and a third innings allowing  five hits, on earned run, one home run, and one walk.  Despite not striking a batter out he did collect the winning decision.  Then on April 10th, he just gave up nine hits, two earned runs, one walk, and struck six out over six innings for the losing decision (1-1).  He threw a combined 166 pitches with 108 called strikes, had a 14-to-11 ground out-to-fly out ratio, and went 0-for-4 with sacrifice at the plate (including a pinch hit appearance).

Joe Kelly was another affective Redbird starting pitcher in both appearances, like Dickson.  The 23-year old right-handed starter received his first call for the 2012 season on April 7th as he gave up five hits, three runs (one earned), two walks, hit one batter, struck five out, and picked one runner off over four innings for the losing decision (0-1).  Kelly improved in his second start tossing seven innings and allowing  four hits, two earned runs, one home run, one walk, and struck out five.  Combined he made 164 pitches with 101 going for strikes, 14-to-5 strikeout-to-fly out ratio, and went 2-for-3 with one walk and one strikeout at the plate.

R.J. Swindle made four scoreless appearances for the Triple-A club that saw he hold a total of seven inherited runners on base.  The 28-year old left-handed reliever logged in three innings and allowed one hit, no runs, one walk, and struck three out.  He collected one hold, finished off one game, threw a total of 29 pitches with 22 coming in for strikes, had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 1-to-2, and kept all seven inherited runners on base.

Who's Not:

Zack Cox ended the week on a five-game hitless streak.  The 22-year old left-handed hitter went 4-for-30 (.133) with one hit by pitch and two strikeouts.  He played eight games at third base, committing one throwing and fielding error, and one game came off the bench as a pinch hitter. 

Bryan Anderson has been slow to catch on for the 2012 season as he opened the year with a five-game hitlesss streak.  The 25-year old left-handed hitter went 1-for-31 (.032) with two walks, nine strikeouts, and grounded into one double play.  He played seven games behind the plate where he allowed four stolen bases.

Adam Reifer made four appearances and split the good and bad.  The 25-year old right-handed reliever came in for a total of three innings on April 6 and 8th, allowing no hits, no runs, two walks, and struck three out.  His next two games, on April 9 and 13, he gave up seven hits, five earned runs, and one home run for a losing decision (0-1).  The 2007 11th round (352nd overall) selection made a combined 71 pitches with 46 coming in as strikes and finished off one game during the period.

Maikel Cleto, like Reifer, split his four relief appearances into two good and two bad.  The 22-year old Dominican had a good performances in the middle of the week, on April 8 and 9.  He pitched three innings and allowed one hit, no runs, and struck two out.  On April 6 and 13, he coughed up six hits, ten runs (nine earned), one home run, two walks, hit one batter, and struck out three over one inning.   The 2011 acquicisition made a total of 87 pitches with 57 coming in as strikes and had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-2.

Eduardo Sanchez struggled with his control in his first two appearances and improved in his final for this period.  The 23-year old Venezuelan right-hander on April 5 earned his first save of the 2011 season after giving up one hit, two earned runs, three walks (one intentional), hit one batter, and struck one out.  He slipped a little further in the next contest only lasting two-thirds of an inning and allowing four hits, four earned runs, two walks, hit one batter, and uncorked a wild pitch.  The seven-year minor leaguer improved in his final appearance of the week striking out three for the inning he tossed.  Sanchez threw a combined 78 pitches with 40 registering as strikes, had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 2-to-0, and finished off two games.

Notes:

Catcher Steven Hill, who missed most of the 2011 season, returned to the disabled list within two games of the season with plantar facicitiis inflammation.  In those two games, Hill has gone 2-for-5 (.400) with one home run, one RBI, five total bases, one run, and one walk.

Luis De La Cruz was called up from A-Advanced Palm Beach to cover the catching absence with Roberto Espinoza, beginning the season on the disabled list, and Hill returning.  De La Cruz had only logged in two games in the Florida State League going 1-for-3 (.333).  He only played one game not collecting a hit in four at-bats but did throw out two base runners before being sent back to Palm Beach.

2011 Memphis Redbirds' closer Victor Marte was scheduled to open the season at Triple-A but due o injuries in the major league bullpen, he was called up right away.

First baseman/outfielder Mark Hamilton and utility fielder Aaron Luna also begin the 2012 season on the disabled list.  Hamilton has been dealing with a quad injury and Luna foot issues.

The St. Louis Cardinals signed Mitch Canham to a minor league contract.  Canham signed mainly for his catching experience has also played at other various positions including the outfield, third base, first base, and even pitched in relief.  He was originally selected by the Cardinals in the 2006 amateur draft and passed but signed with the San Diego Padres in 2007 after being chosen in the first round.  He spent five seasons in the Padres organization before joining the Athletics in 2011. (note: contract was actually purchased from the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League on April 16.)

The Memphis Daily News posted two articles with one centered around the city of Memphis taking over ownership of Autozone Park in 'Let The City Be Broker, Not Owner of AZP' and 'Redbirds Reconnection'.

The Memphis Redbirds is batting .246 (12th overall) with a .300 OBP (13th), .351 SLG (13th), and .651 OPS (13th).  The club ranks third in strikeouts, tied for fifth in stolen bases, tied for seventh in home runs, ninth in runs scored, and bottom quarter in all other stats in the 16-team division.

The Redbirds have a 5.40 ERA (15th overall) with a 1.49 WHIP (10th).  The club ranks first in losses; fourth most (tied) in walks allowed, fifth most in runs allowed, earned runs allowed, home runs allowed (tied), sixth in strikeouts, and seventh most in hits allowed in the 16-team division.
