Tony LaRussa Doesn't Want Cardinals Prospects To Throw Too Hard Too Early

The hottest competition of St. Louis Cardinals camp got started Friday ... sort of.

Left-handers Rich Hill and Jaime Garcia and righty Kyle McClellan — the top candidates for the fifth starter — threw Friday. Manager Tony La Russa, though, sent out a warning to the three pitchers and any other player looking to impress:

Slow down.

Brian Downing and Chuck Finley joined the Angels Hall of Fame on Thursday, the first members to be inducted into the exclusive club -- now numbering eight -- since 1995, when the late, beloved coach, Jimmie Reese, was honored.

Brett Tomko (Athletics):
Signed to a Minor League deal on Aug. 3, A's right-hander Brett Tomko spent two weeks at Triple-A Sacramento before being called up to face the Yankees, who had released him a week before Oakland plucked him off the scrap heap.

The Brewers must win to avoid a Cincinnati sweep, and Felipe Lopez is back in the lineup after missing a start Wednesday with a right foot injury.

Two Ex-Huskies Hang Up Cardinals Spikes

St. Louis Cardinals minor league reliever Mike Sillman and outfielder Luke Gorsett have retired from professional baseball. Three other players have been excused from camp.

More Roster Moves By Cardinals & Minor League Affiliates

The St. Louis Cardinals have sent two more players down to the minor leagues, two others plan to retire, one has been excused, while three others are home nursing injuries.
