Joe Nelson Understands The Situation
So Alan Embree walked in this morning, heating up the competition in the bullpen. Among those on the bubble are Joe Nelson, Scott Atchison and Brian Shouse. As manager Terry Francona mentioned, some of the pitchers' "radars might have gone up a bit".

Salary Arbitration Winners & Losers
The numbers are staggering – the 178 salary arbitration-eligible baseball players this year reeled in contracts worth $766,995,002. To place that figure in perspective, MLB pulled in $6.3 billion in revenues in 2009, so the total spent on salary arbitration players for 2010 chewed up about 12 percent of that total before ever getting to free agents.

Prospectus Today: Pen Man Free Agents Review
I've ordered the relievers the same way I ordered players in the first three pieces in this series. With that said, variance really swamps the difference between any couple of places here, so don't get too caught up in one guy being listed above another. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Market For Free Agent Fireman Will Be Lively
Relief pitching, as usual, will be one of the busiest counters in the free-agent department store. The category isn't nearly as star-driven as it was a year ago, but there are plenty of quality arms available to make for a lively scene.

Prospectus Hit & Run: The Underachieving Class Of 2009
Last week, I checked in on the Angels' quest to make sabermetric history. Examining their third-order Pythagenpat projection—their Pythagorean record based upon their hits, walks, total bases, stolen bases, and outs of all kinds, as well as those of their opponents, all adjusted for park, league, and quality of competition—I discovered that they were on their way to becoming the first team to finish at least 10 games above their third-order projection for a second year in a row.

Astors' Roy Oswalt Might Like Change Of Address
Keep an eye on the relationship between Roy Oswalt and the Astros. He has been disappointed that the club hasn't made an attempt to land Jake Peavy and recently has seemed at odds with manager Cecil Cooper. Oswalt has a full no-trade clause but might not mind a chance to go to a contender. ...

Brett Tomko Dealing With Injuries, But Still In Yankees' Plans
With so many relievers struggling, it is curious to see the veteran Brett Tomko still toiling for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre despite a 0.69 earned run average. Tomko has been dealing with a minor oblique strain but is very much in the Yankees’ plans. “I’m sure you’re going to see him soon enough,” General Manager Brian Cashman said. “He’s doing everything he can do, and he’s a big choice for us.”

For Closers, There Is No Relief From Pressure In Game
The St. Louis Cardinals didn't have a clear-cut No. 1 entering camp and chose from among hard-throwing youngsters Chris Perez and Jason Motte and veteran Ryan Franklin before settling on Motte.
"We are going to use whoever is available, but I would believe that Motte is going to get a chance to close games," manager Tony La Russa says.
