New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner made his major-league debut nearly nine years ago in a game against the Texas Rangers. It wasn’t one of those magical debuts where the rookie ballplayer hits a majestic home run in his first at-bat, but the then 24-year-old from South Carolina got on base, beating the throw to first on a would-be double play and then stole second before Derek Jeter hit a groundout to end the inning. The Yankees lost the game 2-1 to the Rangers.
