Cardinals manager Tony La Russa turned to some of his "shock troops" for Thursday afternoon's matinee against the Mets, resting regulars Yadier Molina and Khalil Greene. St. Louis has known for a while exactly what it had in the way of a backup catcher, with Jason LaRue providing quality defense and occasional pop. But an impressive option has recently emerged as a backup shortstop.
