The Cubs try to even their season series with the Cardinals as Rich Harden faces Todd Wellemeyer. Both are off to rough starts. Harden has struck out more than three times the batters he walked, but that’s misleading. He’s walked eight in 15 innings, and that’s too high. With 26 K, he should have a strikeout rate five or six times his walk rate. He’s also been hurt by three solo home runs and batters going four for nine with runners in scoring position. Wellemeyer is simply very hittable. He doesn’t get a chance to walk batters as they’ve seen pitches they liked and knocked out 29 hits in 17 innings, good for a .403 BA.
