After breezing through two innings on just 19 pitches Saturday in an exhibition start against Washington, St. Louis Cardinals righthander Chris Carpenter could have gone another inning as his arbitrary limit had been established at 40 pitches. But manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan had been pleased with what they saw and they didn’t want to extend Carpenter any farther.
