Birdland Draft Notes

As the Cardinals settle in to make their first pick of this year’s draft, oh, about an hour from now, a little history lesson in player acquisition: Seventy-one years ago today, as colleague Bernie Miklasz discovered with his research, the Cardinals signed a 16-year-old pitcher to a contract.

Jeff Luhnow said it would be difficult to pass up on an infield bat, and with the 13th pick of the draft they took a two-time triple-crown winner, the most productive bat in the Pac-10: Brett Wallace.
