Closer of the future: Chris Perez
Isringhausen certainly isn't going to have to battle to keep his job, but he's posted K:BB ratios less than 2:1 in each of the last three years, and is a 35-year-old injury risk. He's also in the final year of his contract, and with the Cardinals unlikely to be competitive this year, it's possible Tony LaRussa and company will begin to look toward the future. Perez is that future, and if he can improve on last year's 6.5 BB/9, he could see St. Louis at some point in 2008. Isringhausen may very well stay healthy most of the year and save 30-35 games with a sub-3.00 ERA, but he's as susceptible as any to having his body break down.
