Ex-Cardinal Watch 3-16-08

Woody Williams(Astros):
The pool of rotation candidates now stands at seven: Roy Oswalt, Woody Williams, Brandon Backe, Chris Sampson, Shawn Chacon, Jack Cassel and Wandy Rodriguez. Brian Moehler is also being stretched out to start, but he has less of a chance to make the rotation than the others.

Abraham Nunez(Brewers):
Abraham Nunez, Joe Dillon (four hits in Sunday's 8-4 Brewers win) and possibly Vinny Rottino are candidates for that extra infield spot, but because so many of the Brewers' position players are expected to start 140-plus games, there might be fewer opportunities for backups this season.

Dan Haren(Diamondbacks):
Something about Sunday's Cactus League game with the White Sox made starting pitcher Dan Haren feel right at home. It must have been the rainy weather and 47-degree temperature, with some late spring snow dusting Mt. Lemon beyond the center-field fence.

Steve Kline(Giants):
If the latter counts for anything, Kline, the Major League leader in appearances for the last 10 seasons (750), has a definite edge. But the Giants must decide whether Kline's 4.70 ERA last year, his highest since his 1997 rookie season, was an aberration or a foreshadowing of an irreversible lapse.

Mike Maroth(Royals):
Left-hander Mike Maroth followed, but Maroth had trouble locating the strike zone. He walked three and ended up giving a pair of runs. His outing could have been worse. He wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam with a double play.
