It was, for all intents and purposes, him. He was there in the Cardinals’ road grays for the first time at first base. He was in the batter’s box in his classic stance, the bat tapping his back before uncoiling. But it wasn’t going to truly be him until that thwack, that crack, that sound of Paul hitting the Goldschmidt out of the ball.
