Jose Martinez, the most consistent Cardinals hitter this season, appeared as if he had hit the wall as the calendar turned to the ninth month. Martinez, who has the relatively low total of strikeouts of 101 for today’s home-run-or-nothing style that many teams have adopted, had an uncharacteristic 12-day stretch from Sept. 4-15.
